ORLANDO, Fla.—The South Dakota State men's tennis team split a pair of matches Thursday in Orlando. The Jackrabbits lost 6-1 to Youngstown State and defeated St. Francis (Ill.), 4-0.
SDSU is 9-5 on the season and plays Norfolk State today at 11 a.m.
"Yesterday was a hard fought day of tennis. In the first match, I think our emotions got the best of us during some key points in the match. That is something we can easily fix moving forward," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "The good news is the emotion and passion is there. We just need to better harness it when things get competitive. It was a long day in the heat and today will be a good test to see how fast we can recover."
The Jackrabbit dropped all three doubles matches and their lone singles win came from junior Lucas Pereira at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 7-6.
Against St. Francis (Ill.), SDSU won the doubles point with senior Mateus Moreira and freshman Emerson Styles winning 8-1 at No. 1 and junior Jonny Higham and sophomore Marco Paulo Castro winning 9-7 at No. 2.
In singles, senior Henrique Pereira, Pereira and freshman Chuck Tang won at No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.
