TULSA, Okla.—The South Dakota State men's tennis team dropped its Summit League opener Friday, losing 4-3 at Oral Roberts at Philcrest Hills Tennis Center.
The Jackrabbits fall to 10-7 overall and 0-1 in league play while the Golden Eagles improve to 9-7 and 2-0.
"Some days you give it all you've got and just get beat by a good team. I thought tonight was definitely one of those days for our team. We played some of the best doubles we have played all year followed by some great singles play," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "All the credit goes to Oral Roberts which just played too good today. Looking back, we had a few chances we could have executed a bit better, but overall I couldn't be happier with the way we competed. Now, we just need to regroup and be ready for tough UIC team tomorrow."
The Jackrabbits won the doubles point for the 10th time this season. Senior Mateus Moreira and freshman Emerson Styles won their second consecutive match, 6-4 at No. 1. Junior Jonny Higham and sophomore Marco Paulo Castro won 6-4 at No. 2 to improve to 8-2 overall.
Despite leading 1-0, SDSU lost at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 singles. Junior Lucas Pereira won in three sets at No. 5, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6, and Castro won 7-6, 1-6, 10-8.
The Jacks return to action Sunday when they play Illinois Chicago at 6 p.m.
