TULSA, Okla.—The South Dakota State men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 nonconference match Sunday to Illinois at Chicago.
With the loss, the Jackrabbits fall to 10-8 overall while the Flames improve to 6-6.
"Today was another close match that didn't fall our way. We are doing the right things, so we need to keep our heads up and focus on changing these 3-4 scores around when it matters most," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "We are competing extremely hard and have been in every match we have played all year, so I couldn't be happier with our team. After a crazy four weeks of travel, we need to take some time to recover, relax and get ready for some conference matches in South Dakota."
SDSU fell behind 1-0 losing the doubles point. Junior Jonny Higham and Marco Paulo Castro lost 6-2 at No. 2. Junior Lucas Pereira and freshman Chuck Tang lost 6-3 at No. 3. Senior Mateus Moreira's and freshman Emerson Styles' match and No. 1 was unfinished.
The Jacks were down 2-0 after Pereira lost 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5. Styles and senior Lovro Curcija won a No. 3 and No. 1 to tie the match at 2-2. UIC won the next two matches for the win. Castro picked up SDSU's final point with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6.
The Jackrabbits return to action April 1 when they host Western Illinois at 7 p.m. at the Huether Family Match Pointe.
