SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Sophomore
Marco Paulo Castro recorded his fifth consecutive singles win despite the South Dakota State men's tennis team losing 6-1 to No. 47 Denver Sunday afternoon Summit League action at the Huether Family Match Pointe Tennis Center.
The loss drops the Jackrabbits to 11-9 overall and 1-2 in league play while Denver improves to 13-7 overall and 2-0. SDSU is the first league team to win a match vs. the Pioneers this season.
"I thought the team showed really good fight today, but we played with a lack of confidence in streaks. When you have ups and downs with confidence, it is really tough to compete with a team like Denver, which makes you earn every point," sixth-year head coach
Michael Engdahl said. "Hats off to Marco, who played a tremendous match from start to finish. He proved to everyone on the team that if we play with the belief, we can pick up the next level wins. Overall, when the fight is there, you can't ask for much more as a coach. The belief will get there if we keep playing with the effort and focus on the many positives that came from this match."
Castro won in straight sets, defeating Wyatt Lovera, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 6 singles. He is now 9-1 in dual matches at No. 6 and 15-4 overall.
Denver won the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. It won the match after sweeping the No. 2, No. 5 and No. 3 singles matches.
The Jackrabbits return to action Friday when they host IUPUI at noon at the Huether Family Match Pointe Tennis Center.
