BROOKINGS, S.D.—With just two Summit League matches left, the South Dakota State men's tennis team is in a must-win situation when it hosts IUPUI Friday at noon at the Huether Family Match Pointe Tennis Center in Sioux Falls.
The Jackrabbits, 11-9 overall, but 1-2 in league play, are fifth in the league standings, with the top four advancing to The Summit League Championship April 29-30 in Omaha. A win Friday would tie SDSU with Omaha in fourth.
"Friday is a big opportunity for our team and one we are really looking forward to. With the way everything has played out in The Summit League, second place is still up for grabs if we pick up the win. That alone shows how deep the conference is getting and how competitive every conference match is," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "Our challenge for Friday is going to be to take all of that stuff out of our minds and just play Jackrabbit tennis one point at a time. We learned a lot from our last conference match and if we come together and fight our tails off, Friday will be a good day for the Jacks."
SDSU dropped a 6-1 match to Denver April 3, but is the only team so far this season to take a match from the then-47th ranked Pioneers. Sophomore Marco Paulo Castro got the win at No. 6 singles, extending his win streak to five consecutive games.
In doubles, the Jacks will be looking for their 11th doubles point. Junior Jonny Higham and Castro are 7-3 in their last 10 matches and 5-1 at No. 2.
IUPUI snapped a two-match losing streak April 2 with a 4-3 win over Oral Roberts. The Jaguars are 2-0 in Summit League play after dropping Western Illinois 7-0 Feb. 27.
The Jackrabbits and Jaguars meet for 10th time Friday with IUPUI leading the series 7-2.
