Heart Breaker at Drake for Volleyball

DES MOINES, Iowa—Senior Ashley Beaner and Nazya Thies both recorded double-doubles Tuesday night, but the South Dakota State volleyball team lost a heartbreaker, falling in five sets, 25-20, 14-25, 14-25, 25-23 and 4-15, to Drake in the Knapp Center in front of 363 fans.
Beaner had a team-high 14 kills and a career-high 12 digs to record her second consecutive career double-double. She also recorded her 500th career kill in the second set.
Thies collected 13 kills and a personal-best 15 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Freshman Makenzie Hennen added a career-high 11 kills. Sophomore Mattison Munger registered 40 set assists, 6 digs and her first collegiate solo block. Junior Ellie Benson had 12 digs.
Kyla Inderski led Drake with 21 kills and 13 digs while hitting .405. Michelle Thommi had 28 digs.
After forcing the match into a fifth set, Drake used a 5-0 run to take a 9-3 lead. The Jackrabbits scored once more on freshman Ashlynn Smith's kill before losing 15-4.
Sophomore Sierra Peterson came up big in the fourth set for the Jackrabbits. Not recording a kill in the previous three sets, she had back-to-back kills and another kill to help SDSU win 25-23. The Jackrabbits trailed in the set, 13-11, but used a 7-2 run fueled by three consecutive kills by Hennen to take an 18-15 lead. Drake came back to pull within one, 19-18, before Thies had a kill and Smith a service ace for a 21-18 lead to set up Peterson's heroics.
Early blocking helped propel Drake to the third-set win. The Bulldogs recorded three blocks to help them take a 7-4 lead. Drake then ran off five consecutive kills to lead 12-4. SDSU responded with five-straight points on kills from Hennen, Smith and Thies and a pair of Bulldog errors to make it 12-9. Drake outscored the Jacks 13-5 for the win.
Drake led wire-to-wire in the second set. SDSU got as close as seven at 17-10 on Beaner's 500th career kill. The Bulldogs had a 23-11 lead, but the Jacks made it interesting when Smith recorded a kill and senior Mikala Hora came off the bench to record back-to-back service aces to make it 23-14. Drake won on a SDSU hitting error.
In the first set, SDSU broke open a 9-8 match going on an 11-4 run to take a 20-12 lead. Beaner collected three of her seven first-set kills during the run. The Jackrabbits also had a pair of blocks from Thies and Peterson and Smith and Hennen. Drake came back in the set, outscoring the Jacks, 8-6, but Hennen had the final kill.

- Ashley Beaner has 504 career kills entering the weekend.
- South Dakota State had eight total blocks, the most since Nov. 1, 2015, when it had nine vs. Fort Wayne.
- The last time to Jackrabbits recorded double-doubles in the same match was Nov. 1, 2013, at Drake. Mikala Hora had 13 kills and 20 digs and Lexi Fowler had 14 kills and 12 digs.
