South Dakota State women's tennis team travels to Minneapolis, Minnesota, this weekend for the Gopher Invitational hosted by Minnesota.
The Jackrabbits begin play at the Baseline Tennis courts at 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.
"We are looking forward to participating in the Gopher Invitational. We will get a chance to go up against a strong line-up, which will be a great challenge as well as an awesome opportunity," first-year coach
Joey Barnes said. "As part of our development plan, the Gopher Invitational will provide our need for always seeking stronger competition to test our strengths, limitations, hearts and determination. My No. 1 goal at this tournament is see how well we fight for every point. This will be fun!"
Tournament Format
The format for the 13
-team invitational will be a six 16-player singles flights with two rounds Friday, one round Saturday and one round Sunday. Scoring will be best-out-of three with no-ad scoring and a match tiebreaker if the sets are split.
There will be a daily four-team doubles draw starting Thursday. The scoring for doubles will be one set, no-ad scoring with a tiebreaker at 6-6.
Participants
The schools competing in the Gopher are Eastern Michigan, Iowa, Iowa State, Marquette, Minnesota, North Dakota, Northern Iowa, San Jose State, South Dakota, University of Nebraska-Omaha, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wisconsin.
Last season at the Gopher Invite, Morgan Brower had the best finish placing fourth in the C flight. Senior Iasmin Rosa finished 23rd in the A flight, while Maria Laura Velazco finished 25th in the C flight.
