Freshman Trent Francom is ranked third in school history in the pole vault

FARGO, N.D. - The South Dakota State track and field team traveled to North Dakota State to compete in the first meet after the holiday break.

Highlighting the Jackrabbits' performance was freshman Trent Francom's pole vault of 16-01.75. The mark is ranked third-best in South Dakota State's all-time top 10 list. Francom won the event with his personal-best by a foot.

Senior Vanessa Lane recorded a personal-best (7.86) in the 60m and finishing the event seventh. She also competed in her first 4x400m relay and the long jump.

Junior Skyler Monaghan ran his first 400m in blue and yellow. His time of 49.83 is the best time of the season for Jackrabbits. He also competed in the 4x400m relay.

Freshman Madison Mingo also recorded a personal-best in high jump, notching 5-02.50 for an eighth-place finish. Redshirt freshman Bailey Cowling added her second consecutive second-place finish of the early season in high jump. The height of 5-04.50 was half an inch shorter than her personal best.

Junior Abby Sudbeck was just 3.25 inches short of her personal best (57-04.25) she set in December, while junior Kasie Vollmer recorded her season best (44-09.00) in the shot put. Sophomore Dakota Leonhard also added two inches to his season-best throw in the shot put (47-09.00).

"The meet went like we thought it would, some of the younger athletes struggled because of the transition and the long break while the some of the older athletes did well," explained Coach DeHaven.

Up Next
The Jackrabbits will host two meets next weekend, the SDSU DII Invite on Friday, Jan. 19 and the Jim Emmerich on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Redshirt Coby Hilton was the lone Jackrabbit to compete in the 60m, finishing fourth in the finals (7.05). He ran his best time of the day in the semifinals, notching 7.02, which was 0.03 from his career-best.

Senior Vanessa Lane competed in the 60m, finishing seventh in the finals, 0.42 seconds behind the leader. It is her personal-best time in the event, beating her previous-best by 0.02 seconds.

Sophomore Landon Larson finished third (22.59) in the 200m, tied for his best place-finish of the season. Freshman Cameron Kuil and redshirt freshman Caleb Bray rounded out the top 10 for the Jackrabbits. Kuil finished fourth (22.66) and Bray finished eighth (22.89).

Freshman Ataja Frezell led South Dakota State in the 200m, finishing ninth (26.61). Sophomore Delaney Carlson was the second Jackrabbit finisher, posting 12th (27.12).

Junior Skyler Monaghan recorded his first 400m race as a Jackrabbit, winning the event (49.83). Senior Brady Brockel also notched his first 400m race of the season, finishing seventh (51.31).

Senior Sandra Gramer, junior Savannah Dolezal, sophomore Allison Sebern, and freshman Madison Gray all competed in their first 400m of the season. Dolezal (second), Sebern (seventh), and Gramer (ninth) recorded top-10 finishes against 20 competitors.

Junior Wyatt Gatrost ran his first race as a Jackrabbit, posting second (1:21.98) and leading the team in the 600m. Redshirt freshman Mitchel Acker competed in his first competition of the 2018 campaign.

Junior Krista Steele notched her first race of the season, winning the 600m by 0.2 seconds.

Junior Jordan Hanna and sophomore Daniel Radtke both ran their first 800m of the season, Hanna's second event he has competed in this year. They both finished in the top five, Hanna third (1:59.35) and Radtke fourth (1:59.40), out of 12 competitors.

Junior Renae Dykstra competed in her first event of the 2018 indoor season, finishing fourth in the 800m (2:18.51) 1.3 seconds behind the leader.

Freshman Derek Boekelheide recorded sixth (2:33.43) in his first career race as a Jackrabbit. Junior Chandler Klawitter and Freshman John Schwinghamer finished 14th and 15th, respectively. It was Klawitter's first race of the new season.

Freshman Gabe Peters competed in his first track event as a South Dakota State runner. The Summit League Cross Country Championship Newcomer of the Year, finished seventh (4:24.16) in the mile.

Sophomore Kendra Dykstra finished fourth (5:03.64) in the mile, her first race of the indoor season. Freshman Cailee Peterson, senior Mackenzie Schell, sophomore Anna Fasen also in their first race of the indoor track season. Peterson's eighth-place finish (5:09.92), was her first track competition as a Jack.

Freshman Michael Schwinghamer led the Jackrabbits in the 3,000m, recording fifth (8:58.17). The other freshmen in Evan Fick, Cole Sargent, and Jacob Wilts competed in their first event since the cross country season in the fall.

Junior Rachel Propst, the third-place finisher in the 3,000m, led the Jacks out of 11 competitors. All of the State runners competed in their first race of the season.

Redshirt freshman Nick Wessels led State in the second 60m hurdle race of the season. He finished sixth (8.64) in the prelims, 0.46 seconds behind the leader. Senior Tom Bates recorded his first 60m hurdle time of the 2018 campaign, finishing ninth (8.79) in the prelims.

Sophomore Jaymie O'Connor competed in her second meet of the early 2018 season. She won the prelims by 0.16 seconds (8.91) to qualify for the finals race. O'Connor improved her 60m hurdles time of the afternoon by 0.09 seconds (8.82), her second-best time of the year, to claim her first race win of the season.

Coming in second for the Jacks was sophomore Haley Mottinger, finishing 10th (9.31) in her second 60m hurdles race of the year.

Freshman Trent Francom jumped a personal-best 16-01.75 to win the event. The mark is ranked third best in the Jackrabbit all-time list. Freshman Amy Muller also recorded a personal-best, and the school's seventh-best all-time, finishing 10th (11-00.25) and improving her height by 8.25 inches.
