KANSAS CITY, Missouri—Four close sets again, but the South Dakota State volleyball team lost 3-1 to Western Michigan Saturday afternoon at the UMKC Invitational. The Jackrabbits lost 25-21, 25-20, 24-26 and 25-21.

Makenzie Hennen had a double-double with 16 kills and 10 digs. Rookie and all-tournament honoree
Sydney Andrews collected 11 kills and hit .429 from the middle. On defense, freshman
Ellie Thein had 14 digs, sophomore
Kari Brucker 11 digs and rookie
Crystal Burk 10 digs.

"Though we didn't pull out a win, we were extremely competitive all weekend long and most importantly, continued to improve throughout the tournament," fourth-year head coach
Nicole Cirillo said. "There is a lot to look forward to and I'm extremely excited about the possibilities."

How It Happened: Western Michigan took an 8-4 lead to open the match. It pushed its lead to 23-17. The Jackrabbits then used a 3-0 run to pull within 23-20, but the Broncos scored two of the final three points for the win.

South Dakota State took an 8-5 lead in the second set after Brucker registered back-to-back service aces. Later in the set, WMU used a 7-0 run to take the lead, 17-12. It extended the lead to 21-13 before the Jackrabbits used a 6-0 run to pull within three points, 22-19. Senior
Sierra Peterson's kill made it 23-20, after both teams traded points. The Broncos closed the set with two kills.

The Jackrabbits opened the fourth set with a 5-0 run and led until 21-21 when Western Michigan tied it on a kill. SDSU had three kills and a service ace for the final four points.

Western Michigan raced out to a 12-5 lead in the final set. The teams battled back and forth until it was 20-18 after Hennen's 15th kill of the match. The Broncos had back-to-back kills before Hennen converted again with a kill at 22-19. WMU took advantage of a SDSU service error and recorded two kills to end the match.

Notables
Hennen's 16 kills was one off of a career high. It was her fourth career double-double.
