South Dakota State Director of Golf
Casey VanDamme announced Tuesday that Matthew Schaefer will attend SDSU and play for the men's golf team next season.

"Matthew is a great athlete who has developed into a great player," VanDamme said. "We look forward to his continued development and are very confident his work ethic, determination and skill will fit in very well with the rest of our team."

Schaefer spent this fall at Northeast Community College. He placed sixth at the Nebraska Intercollegiate Golf Tournament with a 149. The Fordyce, Nebraska, native tied for ninth to lead the Hawks at the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Fall Preview with a three-over par 75. Schaefer also tied for first at the Midland Fall Invitational with a two-under par 70.

At Hartington Cedar Catholic High School, Schaefer won the 2018 and 2016 Mid-State Conference golf tournaments. At the 2018 tournament, he broke the school record and the Mid-State Conference record, shooting a 66.

The four-year letterwinner won the district tournament and placed seventh at the state tournament as a junior. In 2016, Schaefer was runner-up at the district tournament and finished 17
th at the state tournament as a sophomore.

Schaefer was named to the 2017 and 2018 all-state teams and was named team Most Valuable Player from 2016 to 2018.

Schaefer competed in American Junior Golf Association events, on the Nebraska Junior Golf Tour and the PGA Junior Series and Nebraska Fall Junior Series. He played in the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur Qualifier, finished sixth at the 2018 Nebraska Amateur and placed 10
th at the 2018 Nebraska Junior Amateur.
