Lexington, Ky. – South Dakota State women's volleyball assistant coach Courtney Chacon and graduate assistant coach Taylor Svehla were recently honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA).Â
Chacon was selected as one of 40 recipients to receive the fifth-annual AVCA Diversity Award. The awards are sponsored by collegiate volleyball conferences and coaches. Chacon was sponsored by the Mountain West Conference assistant coaches.Â
"I'm really honored to be receiving this award," Chacon said. "I'm getting the opportunity to learn from a community of diverse coaches who all share the same love for volleyball. I'm excited to grow not only as a volleyball coach but also as a person!"
The AVCA strives to advance the sport of volleyball by providing opportunities to coaches for leadership, advocacy and professional development. Recipients will participate in educational, developmental and relationship building experiences in conjunction with the 2020 AVCA Virtual Convention, Dec. 16-19.
Additionally, recipients will be involved in an AVCA Diversity Award winner alumni program that consists of continuing education, relationship building and mentoring upon completion of the initial programming.
Chacon is in her first season with the Jackrabbits after serving as the assistant volleyball coach at Western Colorado in 2019 and a volunteer assistant volleyball coach at the University of Wyoming.Â
Svehla was one of nine recipients to receive the Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship. The scholarship provides the opportunity for up-and-coming volleyball coaches to attend their first AVCA Convention with the scholarship money used to pay for convention registration. Scholarship recipients will have the opportunity to interact with successful coaches from all levels and explore the limitless networking and education opportunities available at the AVCA Virtual Convention.
"I'm so thankful to the Coaches 4 Coaches Committee for choosing me to be a scholarship recipient this year," Svehla said. "This opportunity gives me the chance to learn from experts in my field that I have admired for my entire volleyball career."
To be eligible for the Coaches 4 Coaches Scholarship, applicants must be active AVCA members who are attending their first AVCA Convention. Now in its 12th year, a selection committee reviews the applications and makes their decision based on academics, contributions to the sport of volleyball on and off the court, a professional letter of recommendation, and a personal written submission outlining their desire to attend the AVCA Virtual Convention and their aspirations in coaching.
Svehla is in her second season with the Jacks and is pursuing a master of science in sport & recreation administration. She ended her Georgia College career earning Peach Belt Conference Player of the Year and AVCA All-American Honorable Mention honors in 2018.
South Dakota State opens its 2021 spring season Jan. 31 as it hosts Western Illinois at Frost Arena.
