February 5, 2020, marks the 34th Annual National Girls & Women in Sports Day. This celebration inspires girls and women to play and be active, to realize their full power. The confidence, strength and character gained through sports participation are the very tools girls and women need to become strong leaders in sports and life.
Â
260 female student-athletes will wear the Jackrabbit yellow and blue during the 2019-20 athletic seasons, representing generations of Jackrabbit greats since the first female NCAA sanctioned competitions began at SDSU in 1965.

Not many college seniors can say they've held a 4.0 GPA throughout college. But for
Sydney Bormann, a captain on the South Dakota State women's golf team, some major hard work and time management have led her to accomplish the feat.
Â
Bormann is in her second year as captain where she ranks sixth all-time at SDSU in career stroke average with a 77.65 mark.
Â
Even with having her hands full between maintaining a 4.0 in Human Biology and serving as team captain, Bormann has been able to achieve a research grant as a research assistant with the SDSU veterinary and Biomedical Sciences department.
Â
She's conducted experiments using gut micro bio libraries and completes projects on pathogenic competition and biofilm formation. She also presented her research at the National Collegiate Honors Council Annual Conference Nov. 6-10 in New Orleans.
Â
Many would say being a top-notch student and playing golf at the Division I level is near impossible, but Bormann has found her niche in balancing both of these successfully.
Â
"I especially think if you love what you do it is not so much a balance, but just an opportunity to pursue your different passions," says Bormann.
Â
Sports have also allowed the Parkston, S.D. native to build what she needs to be successful on the course and in the classroom.
Â
"A lot of the characteristics you get from sports perseverance, handling adversity, diligence and a strong work ethic really carry over into other aspects of life, school, and in the workplace," said Bormann.
Â
Bormann has always wanted to attend medical school after witnessing the passion and dedication that her older sister had. Her sister, Jordan, also studied pre-Med as an undergrad and played golf at Augustana University.
Â
"It has been awesome to have her help along the way and really be able to follow her journey and get her advice for the path," said Bormann.
Â
Bormann has finished applications to medical school with the hopes of staying somewhere in the Midwest.
Â
"I think being a successful female student-athlete really means taking the opportunities we have been given and making a lasting impact," Bormann said. "We only have a short four years here, but it is more about what we can give back to our team, programs, university and the community and really setting a good example for young female athletes."
