Overland Park, KAN. - South Dakota State's
Tylee Irwin has been named a candidate for the Senior CLASS Award, an honor that recognizes student-athletes who excel both on and off the court. Irwin is one of 30 nominees selected as official candidates for NCAA DI women's basketball.
Irwin is the only Summit League basketball player, men or women, named as a candidate.Â
Irwin was a Preseason All-Summit League First Team pick after averaging 12.8 points and 4.5 rebounds a season ago. She currently ranks second in scoring for the Jackrabbits and is in her second season as a team captain.
Off the court, Irwin carries a 3.8 GPA as a pre-chiropractic student and has been honored on the Summit League Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence as well as the Summit League Honor Roll. She serves as a Brookings County Youth Mentor, which allows her to spend time with and be a role model to a child in Brookings. The Wahpeton, North Dakota native is also a leader in team service projects that include working at the Boys and Girls Club, reading at local elementary schools and serving at the food pantry.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.Â
Â
The women's candidates will be narrowed to ten finalists later in the season, and those names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will then select one male candidate and one female candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four C's of community, classroom, character and competition.
Â
The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2022 NCAA Men's Final Four® and NCAA Women's Final Four® this spring.
