BROOKINGS, SD – Two South Dakota State cross country runners were named to the Summit League Cross Country Academic All-League Teams on Wednesday, league officials announced.
Of the six athletes honored on the men's side, two were Jackrabbits—Tom Breuckman and Daniel Burkhalter.
Brecukman was named to the squad with a 3.94 GPA in mechanical engineering. The Andover, Minn., native is a three-time league academic honoree for cross country and has previously been recognized on the Summit League Academic Honor Roll
Burkhalter, of Prairie City, earned his second cross country academic recognition after earning a 4.0 grade point average in statistics. He was recently named Scholar of the Meet at the Summit League Cross Country Championships this season.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale), completed at least one full academic year at the current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team's competitions.
Nominations are brought forth by sports information directors from the league's institutions that carry cross country, and voting is conducted by both the SIDs and facility athletic representatives (FARs). Each team is made up of the 5 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all ties standing.
The South Dakota State men's team earned their seventh straight team title at the championship meet on Oct. 29, while the women's team finished as runner-up.
