VERMILLION - The South Dakota State men's golf team set a number of program records Monday as the squad topped South Dakota in duel action at the Bluffs Golf Course.
"I'm really proud of all 10 guys today, this was a very important day for the program," said head coach
Parker Edens. "This gave us a great chance to build some great momentum heading into this final stretch of the season."
The Jackrabbits posted a single-round 269 (-19) in round two and a 546 (-30) final 36-hole tally, both new program bests.
SDSU's A Team was led by
Ty Kretz, who matched the school record for a single round (65, -7) on his first lap and finished with a 131 (-13) 36-hole scorecard, also a new record. He placed first individually.
Luke Honner recorded a 133 (-11) score for the A Team, which now ranks second all-time behind Kretz's 131. The freshman placed third overall.
"All 10 guys showed signs great golf," Edens continued. "They've all be working very hard and we are starting to see the fruits of that labor. Ty and Luke had awesome rounds of golf, it's always a great thing to see school records be broken. These two are just scratching the surface of what they're capable of."
Matthew Schaefer placed sixth with a 4-under-par 140, followed by
Tyler Seeling in a tie for ninth place (142, -2).
Jonah Dohrer rounded out the A Team in a tie for 14th place (148, +4).
The SDSU B Team finished fourth.
Bryson Mercier and
Noah Boraas tied for ninth place (142, -2), followed by
Tucker D'Allaird in 12th (143, -1),
Blake Schaper in 13th (147, +3) and
Lucas Schaefbauer in a tie for 18th (150, +6).
NOTES
- The previous single-round team record was 276, set at the Jackrabbit Invitational in the 2011-12 season.
- The previous 36-hole team record was 563, set at The Jackrabbit in the 2016-17 season.
- Kretz is the fifth Jackrabbit all-time to shoot a 65 single round.
- The previous individual 36-hole record was 135, set by Alejandro Restrepo in the 2016-17 season and Hudson Carpenter in the 2013-14 season.
