LINCOLN, Neb. - South Dakota State's
Alex Kandolin is in a tie for first place following the opening round of the Summit League Championship Sunday.
Kandolin, a senior, fired a 70 (-1) over the first 18 holes and sits tied with Denver's Anna Zanusso for the lead. Kandolin rolled in three birdies and had only one hole over par on the day.
McKenzie Mages overcame a tough start to finish the round in a tie for 11th place. She opened the day with three bogeys on the first four holes, but rebounded to tally a 73 (+2) on the first lap.
"As a coach watching each player fight for every stroke and not give up until the last putt drops, is all we can ask for, and this team did just that," said head coach
Ericka Schneider. "This team is hungry for competition and their hard work this season and continued improvement is proof of that. McKenzie fought hard and had a great comeback after a rough start. Alex had a stellar round today giving herself lots of opportunities for birdies."
Piper Stubbs and
Tatum Depuydt are tied for 25th place with a 6-over-par 77.
Shakira-Ann Kuys is one shot back in a tie for 33rd place (78, +7).
The Jackrabbits are in fourth place as a team with a 297 (+13) first-round scorecard. No. 38 Denver has a seven-shot lead on the field with a 286 (+2).
"We are sitting in a good spot as a team after round one," Schneider added. "We didn't have our absolute best as a team today, but still ended up in a decent spot with two rounds left to play. It's a great feeling to know we have the room for improvement over the next two days. If we can stick to our process and focus on our own games, this team can score on this course. I'm excited to see what they can accomplish over the next two days."
SDSU has 13 birdies as a squad which leads all teams. Mages has four total birdies to lead all players. Kandolin's 14 par holes is the second-most among the field.
Action in Lincoln is set to resume at 8 a.m. Monday morning. Kuys gets the Jacks started at 8:50, followed by the rest of the team in 10-minute increments. All players will tee off on the first hole.
