CORALVILLE, Iowa - South Dakota State volleyball was swept by Middle Tennessee State Saturday afternoon in the team's second match of the Iowa Fryfest Invitational.
The Jackrabbits (1-4) fell 28-26, 25-20, 25-17.
Freshman
Sylvie Zgonc led the Jacks on offense and defense, notching 15 kills and 12 digs for the third double-double of her young career. She tallied a .448 clip in the contest with only two errors on 29 total swings.
Katie Van Egdom added 10 kills for the Jacks, followed by
Sydni Schetnan with seven.
Raegen Reilly dished 31 assists to go with nine digs, four kills, two blocks and a service ace.
Faith Saewert tallied a pair of aces and five digs.
Set One: The teams traded points through the majority of the opening game without much separation until a five-point run put the Jacks up 22-18 late. The run included consecutive ace serves by Saewert along with kills from Schetnan and Van Egdom. MTSU responded with a 5-1 stretch to tie the set at 23-all, then went on to win it with extra points, 28-26.
Set Two: A solo block and a kill by Schetnan tied the second set at three. Reilly and
Elyse Winter teamed up on the block to put the Jackrabbits ahead 7-5, then Winter and Van Egdom recorded another block to make it 8-6. SDSU led 13-10 after an MTSU serving error and Van Egdom kill, forcing a timeout call from the Blue Raiders. MTSU tied the set at 13-all out of the break, put together six straight to lead 20-16 and went on to win by five.
Set Three: SDSU got off to a quick 4-0 start behind a kill and an ace from Winter, plus a pair of kills from Zgonc. MTSU came back with an 8-1 run to lead 11-7 and continued to push for the sweep.
NOTES
Sylvie Zgonc matched her career high of 15 kills. She has tallied 15 kills in three of her five collegiate matches.
