South Dakota State volleyball opened the 2023 season with a 1-2 mark at the Rumble in the Rockies tournament hosted by Wyoming this past weekend. The Jacks head to the Fryfest Invitational hosted by Iowa to take on Kent State, Middle Tennessee State and the host Hawkeyes over three days in Iowa City.
KEY STORYLINES
- Katie Van Egdom averaged 3.73 kills per set during the Jacks' opening weekend in Wyoming. Van Egdom, primarily a back-row player last season, recorded a career-best 17 kills at a .464 clip in the win over Winthrop.
- Freshman Sylvie Zgonc added 3.18 kills per set for the Jacks during her first competitive weekend as a Jackrabbit.
- Freshman Brogan Beck took part in 10 total blocks against Winthrop, matching the program record for total blocks in a four-set match.
- SDSU's regular rotation at the Wyoming tournament featured five returners and five newcomers.
- State returns three starters from last season in Raegen Reilly, Masa Scheierman and Elyse Winter. The Jacks also bring back Katie Van Egdom and Alia Schlimgen, who saw significant time in the rotation a year ago.
- The Jackrabbit roster features a blend of eight returners and seven newcomers. The newcomer group is highlighted by the addition of Louisville transfer Sydni Schetnan, who joined the team in January.
- Raegen Reilly dished 1,307 assists in her sophomore campaign, which is good for first place on SDSU's single-season assists chart for the current scoring era.
- Masa Scheierman was a Summit League All-Freshman Team selection last season. She ranked second in kills per set for the Jacks in 2022 behind Crystal Burk.
- SDSU will need to account for a few departures from last season, most notably that of Crystal Burk. The outside hitter alone accounted for 36 percent of the Jacks' kills a season ago and graduated ranking third all-time in career kills.
- SDSU made several changes to the program's top-five lists in 2022, including new single-season bests in kills (1,701), hitting percentage (.228) and service aces (183).
