MEET 3: South Dakota State at SDSU D2/NAIA Open |
BROOKINGS, SD – South Dakota State track and field will host its second home meet in a row as the NAIA/D2 Open takes places in the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex on Friday and Saturday.
The multi events in the women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon will kick off Friday's action at 3 p.m. with field events following at 4 p.m. and track events at 4:30 p.m.
Saturday will resume with the remaining events of the heptathlon starting at 9:30 a.m. as the events on the track and field will continue at noon.
LAST TIME OUT
The South Dakota State men's track and field team took first as the women finished second behind several all-time performances at the Jim Emmerich Alumni meet on Saturday.
Jared Wipf made headlines as he initially ran a new PR of 6.77 in the 60-meter dash prelims to tie for second on the SDSU All-Time list. But in the event finals, he clocked a blistering time of 6.73 to break the school record and take second in the event.
In that same finals race,
Evan Henderson jumped up the top 10 list with a time of 6.78 for fourth all-time and fourth in the event.
Jake Werner ran a PR of 6.88 for fifth and
Drew Olson was seventh in 6.90.
Pierre Lear ran a 7.95 for second in the 60-meter hurdle finals as four Jacks placed in the top 10 of the 200-meter dash: Werner (21.81, second),
Carter Toews (22.29, fourth), Henderson (22.36, fifth) and Olson (22.54, seventh).
James Pierce etched his name on the SDSU top-10 list with a clocking of 48.69 in the 400-meter dash for third in the event and sixth all-time. Also finishing in the top 10 were
Thailan Hallman (48.81, fourth place) and
Reggie Slaba (49.53, ninth place).
Three Jackrabbits finished in the top 10 of the 800-meter run, with
Brandon Kampsen (1:52.78, event debut) in third,
Andrew Moeller (1:55.12) in seventh and
Sean Murphy (1:55.48) in eighth.
Josh Becker led the way in the mile run, taking fifth in 4:11.19.
Jackson Dutcher (4:13.47, event debut) was ninth,
Nathan Notgrass (4:18.26, PR) came 18
th,
Tyler O'Neill (4:25.08, PR) finished 26
th and
Will Harder (4:29.78, event debut) was 32
nd.
Will Lohr won the men's 3000-meter run in 8:22.73 as
Carson Noecker took second in 8:22.91 in his event debut and
Christian Noble finished tenth in a personal best 8:35.00.
In the 4x400-meter relay, SDSU's B squad clocked a time of 3:27.23 as the C team ran a 3:28.62 and the A team ran a 3:40.37 after suffering a baton drop.
Tristen Hanna won the triple jump with a mark of 46-11.75 as
Isaac Flanegan took sixth in his event debut with a 42-08.25 in the finals.
In the finals of the men's long jump,
Rylan McDonnell finished fifth with a personal best mark of 22-02.50 while
Hudson Schroeder took sixth with a 21-10.00.
SDSU went back-to-back in the high jump as
Connor Powers clears 6-04.75 to tie for fourth and
Carson Kirwan claimed sixth with a 6-04.75.
Lee Reiser threw a 51-01.50 for fifth place in the shot put finals as
Caiden Fredrick finished sixth with a 50-11.00.
Caiden Fredrick claimed runner-up in the weight throw with a mark of 59-08.25 that was good for ninth all-time.
Hunter Wallster finished fourth with a 59-05.00 and
Ethan Fischer was sixth with a 56-09.50.
South Dakota State finished first out of 11 team with 153.50 points through 16 scored events. North Dakota State came second in the standings with 139.50 points and Dordt rounds out the top three with 102 points.
On the women's side of action,
Jaiden Boomsma finished fourth in 7.58 seconds as
Brielle Dixon took sixth in 7.80 seconds in the 60-meter dash finals. Dixon also qualified for the 60-meter dash finals and finished fourth overall with a time of 8.71.
Boomsma made her 200-meter dash debut, running a 24.74 for third in the event and fifth on the SDSU all-time list.
Maggie Madsen joined her in history with a 25.07 for eighth all-time and fourth in the event.
Erika Kuntz ran a 57.63 for fifth in the 400-meter dash as
Jessica Boekelheide clocked a personal best of 58.29 for eighth place.
Robyn Dayton made her event debut in the 600-meter run and finished third with a clocking of 1:55.13 as
Harley Fischer ran a 2:18.33 to take fifth in the 800-meter run.
Three Jacks claimed spots in the top 10 of the mile run, led by
Grace Waage's second place finish in 4:52.78.
Claire Beckman came seventh in 4:57.07 and Leah Hisken was eighth in 4:57.72.
The SDSU women's A relay team took second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:53.96 as the B team finished sixth in 4:02.11.
Layne Kirkendoll won the high jump with a mark of 5-05.00 as
Hadley Carlson and
Taylor Jochum tied for third with a 5-03.00.
Madison Kizer finished seventh with her height of 5-03.00.
Kirkendoll also leapt into seventh place of the long jump finals with a mark of 17-07.50.
Laci Leverty claimed third in the pole vault with a mark of 11-03.75 and
Kiah Boetel took seventh with a 9-10.00.
Nora Butler finished sixth in the women's shot put finals with a mark of 43-01.00 in her Jackrabbit debut and
Josie Curry was eighth with a PR of 42-02.00.
South Dakota State finished second in the team standings out of 13 squads with 97 points through 16 scored events. North Dakota State claimed first with 222 points as North Dakota rounded out the top three with 51 points.
WIPF HONORED BY SUMMIT: South Dakota State's own
Jared Wipf has been named the TicketSmarter Summit League Men's Track Peak Performer of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday.
Wipf first ran a new personal best of 6.77 in the 60-meter dash prelims before besting himself again and clocking a 6.73 in the event finals. His new time broke the SDSU school record previously held by Coby Hilton and gave him a runner-up finish in the event.
The mark also now ranks second in the league so far this season and is Wipf's second career weekly accolade.
REGIONAL RANKINGS: The first weekly regional ranking by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association was released on Jan. 22, with both the Jackrabbit men and women picked 20
th in the Midwest Region.
MEN, WOMEN PICKED THIRD IN PRESEASON POLL: The Jackrabbit men and women were each chosen to finish third in the 2024 Summit League Indoor Track and Field Preseason Poll, officials announced Thursday.
