Minneapolis, Minn. - The South Dakota State volleyball team continued its strong start to the season with a 3-0 sweep over RV Dayton (25-22, 25-23, 25-17) Friday afternoon at the Maturi Pavilion. The Jackrabbits improved to 4-1 on the season while the Flyers dropped to 3-3.
Madison Burr tallied 12 kills for SDSU and hit .375 for the match. Her kill total was the second-highest of her career and her best mark for a three-set match. The middle blocker added a team-high four blocks.
Sylvie Zgonc also had 12 kills for the Jacks to go with 10 digs.
Sydni Schetnan hit .467 with seven kills on 15 errorless swings. She had three blocks on the afternoon.
Rylee Martin, a setter, posted a career-high six kills while dishing 33 assists and notching 15 digs. She also took part in three blocks and had an ace serve.
Maggie Meister recorded 12 digs and three aces.
Joslyn Richardson totaled 10 digs.
Panna Ratkai and Liana Sarkissian paced the Dayton offense with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Set 1: Dayton quickly built a 5–1 lead in the opening set with a pair of kills and capitalizing on SDSU errors. The Jackrabbits responded with a 4–0 run, sparked by kills from
Madison Burr and
Sylvie Zgonc, tying the set at 5–5. The sides went back-and-forth and was tight through the end.
Alia Schlimgen gave the Jackrabbits the lead back with consecutive ace serves at 18-17. Dayton tied the set a few more times, but SDSU held on to take the opening set.
Set 2: A 7-1 Dayton run gave the Flyers a 12-7 lead in the second. The Jacks responded with a five of the next six points with multiple kills from
Sylvie Zgonc and an ace from
Maggie Meister. Dayton worked back out to a 20-15 lead. SDSU again came back with an 8-1 run to lead 23-21.
Hannah Klein had a pair of kills and the Jacks got aces from Meister and
Rylee Martin during the stretch. Tied at 23-all, Zgonc notched back-to-back kills to put the Jackrabbits up 2-0 in the match.
Set 3: SDSU jumped out to a 12-5 lead with three solo blocks - one each from
Sydni Schetnan,
Hannah Klein and
Annalee Ventling-Brown - another ace from
Maggie Meister. Dayton scored the next four, but SDSU dominated the set overall.
Rylee Martin had consecutive kills during a 4-0 run to lead 19-11. A Dayton service error secured the sweep for the Jackrabbits.
NOTES
- Dayton started the year in the AVCA Top-25 and just fell out of the rankings in the latest poll release.
- The Flyers went to the third round the NCAA Tournament last season.
- SDSU is now 1-0 all-time against Dayton.
