LARAMIE, Wyo. ? Wyoming went on a 16-0 run early in the second half and held South Dakota State without a second-half field goal for nearly 12 minutes to start the half as the Cowgirls ended SDSU's run in Women's NIT with a 70-59 victory Sunday afternoon before a record crowd of 11,253 at Arena-Auditorium.
The Jackrabbits end the season with a 25-6 overall record, snapping their 14-game winning streak. Wyoming improved to 25-9 and will face Kansas State in semifinal action later this week.
SDSU led early, building a five-point lead on a couple occasions, the last at 15-10 on a layup by Ashlea Muckenhirn at the 9:13 mark of the first half.
Wyoming, which struggled with turnovers in the opening 10 minutes, began to find a rhythm offensively and courted with a 12-2 run over the next two minutes to go up by five, 22-17. The Cowgirls led by seven later in the half, 28-21, before SDSU's Alison Anderson hit a three-pointer and Megan Vogel scored three points at the free throw to pull the Jackrabbits to within 30-27 at the half.
The Jackrabbits got to within 32-30 on a pair of Jennifer Warkenthien free throws in the first minute of the second half before Wyoming went on its decisive run. Jodi Bolerjack, who led the Cowgirls with 16 points, started the run with a three-pointer and Elizabeth Dissen closed out the spurt with back-to-back layups.
SDSU tried to play catch-up the rest of the way, cutting the margin to back to single digits on a pair of free throws by Ketty Cornemann with 2:21 to play.
After struggling from the line early in the stretch run, Wyoming iced the game at the line, converting 8-of-10 attempts in the final 87 seconds. The Cowgirls were 22-of-31, 71 percent for the game.
Wyoming ended the game 21-of-43 from the field, 48.8 percent, including 6-of-17 on three-pointers. Megan McGuffey scored 14 points off the bench and Hanna Zavecz added 13.
The Jackrabbits finished the night 19-of-50 from the field, 38 percent, connecting on 4-of-16 three-point tries. At the line, SDSU was 17-of-20, 85 percent.
Vogel was 11-of-12 from the line as she set the SDSU single-season record for free throws made with 154. The lone senior on the team, she finished with a game-high 19 points, ending her career second on the Jackrabbit career scoring list with 1,850 points.
Warkenthien and Muckenhirn each scored eight. Courtney Grimsrud led the Jackrabbits with seven rebounds.
Wyoming held a 29-28 edge on the boards, with Justyna Podziemska pulling down seven rebounds.
Each team committed 15 turnovers.
