Nana Allison-Brewer to take over Jackrabbit volleyball program

South Dakota State Athletic Director Fred Oien announced Friday the hiring of Nana (pronounced Nah-na) Allison-Brewer as the 10th head volleyball coach in the Jackrabbits history.
Allison-Brewer takes over the Jackrabbit volleyball program after two years as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., where the Big Green compiled a 27-21 record and a pair of fourth place finishes in The Ivy League.
A Farmington, N.M. native, Allison-Brewer joined the Dartmouth staff after completing her master's degree in higher education and serving as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Arizona, where in her final year, the Wildcats advanced in the elite eight at the 2006 NCAA tournament.
Before continuing her education at Arizona, Allison-Brewer served as the head coach for Chinle High School in Arizona, Kirtland Central High School in New Mexico and Sabino High School in Arizona, earning Coach-of-the-Year for the Arizona Grand Canyon District 4A in 2000 and for the New Mexico District 1-4A in 2001. She also worked for two years as the Athletic Director at Ha:san Preparatory & Leadership School in Tucson, Ariz.
One of just a handful of Native Americans (Navajo) to play and coach at the Division I level, Allison-Brewer earned four varsity letters at the University of New Mexico from 1995 to 1999, compiling 1,005 digs and 195 service aces for the Lobos in 417 games over 118 matches. When she graduated in 2000 with a degree in statistics, she ranked eighth at New Mexico in career digs and in career service aces.
The 1998 Western Athletic Conference Defensive Specialist-of-the-Year, the Native American Sports Council tabbed her the Woman Sport Warrior-of-the-Year in 1999.
In addition to her volleyball skills, Allison-Brewer played on the 1997 Lobo women's basketball team that won the WAC postseason title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
On July 7, 2006, Allison-Brewer played on a Native American volleyball team comprised of former and current college players, and won the gold medal at the North American Indigenous Games.
An active member in sports organizations like the U.S. Volleyball Diversity Committee, Allison-Brewer represented the U.S. Olympic Committee at the International Olympic Academy held in Olympia, Greece in 1998.
The founder and president of the Native American Volleyball Academy (NAVA), Allison-Brewer remains active in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Minority Coaches Committee and as a member of the USA Volleyball Diversity Commission.
Allison-Brewer is married to Joseph Brewer and is mother to two girls Iyawa Daisy (5) and See-na-ne Nanabah Curly Brewer (2).
Allison-Brewer inherits a Jackrabbit squad that compiled a 25-11 record during the 2007 campaign, enroute to The Summit Leagues regular and postseason titles and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. She replaces Andrew Palileo, who resigned on April 15, to take the head coaching job at Washington State University.
The Jackrabbits newest coach begins her duties on June 10.
