South Dakota State senior Mackenzie Angner racked-up an SDSU 4-Set record 70 attacks and recorded a match-high 19 kills, but Oral Roberts balanced offensive attack made-up the difference in a 3-1 win on Friday in the Jackrabbits home and Summit League opener.
Angner also led the Jacks with 18 digs to record the team's only double-double. ORU's Carol Garbato led all players with 23 digs.
ORU fought to a 28-26 win in the first set and needed extra points again to take the second set 27-27. SDSU bounced back to win the third set 25-23, but the Golden Eagles ran away with the fourth set 25-20 to earn the victory.
The Jacks fall to 1-8 and 0-1 in The Summit League with the loss, while ORU improves to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in league play heading into Saturday's match at North Dakota State.
SDSU returns to action on Sunday, when they host Missouri State in non-conference action. The Bears (7-5) enter the match after dropping a 3-1 match at No. 16 Wichita State in their Missouri Valley Conference opener on Friday.
ORU's Danijela Novakovic led three Golden Eagles in double-digit kills with 13, Joanita Souza finished with 12 while the defending Summit League player of the week Jackie Oliveira finished the match with ten.
Neither team finished hit for a high percentage, but ORU did combine to hit .128 compared to the .076 total put up by the Jacks.
Oral Roberts opened the match on a 6-1 run, but the Jacks used a trio of 4-0 runs to battle back and eventually tie the set at 16-all.
The Golden Eagles scored the next two points, and although they never trailed again, the Jacks came back to tie the set four times before ORU finally put the set away on their fourth try at set-point.
Oral Roberts kept the momentum going into the second set, scoring eight of the first 12 points to take an 8-4 lead. Much like the first set, the Jacks would come back to tie the set, forcing more extra points, but this time, ORU capitalized on their third set-point to win the second set 27-25.
Desperately trying to avoid the shutout, SDSU came out hot in the third set and opened up a 14-7 lead. The Jacks then extended that lead to nine-points at 20-11 before ORU started to mount a comeback.
A 6-0 run got the Golden Eagles back to within three at 20-17, before they eventually completed the come back to tie the set at 22 and at 23 before the Jacks scored the final two-points to secure the win and force a fourth set.
SDSU played ORU close for the first half of the fourth set before the Golden Eagles started to pull away. A 6-all tie quickly turned into 10-7 and then a 15-10 ORU lead.
A quick 3-0 Jackrabbit run got them back to with two-points at 13-15, but they would get no closer than two points the rest of the way.
Along with Angner and her 19 kills, freshman Kellie Fiegen and Brookings native Ellyce Youngren both tallied nine kills in their home debut.
The Jacks hope to turn things around on Sunday against Missouri State, first serve against the Bears is schedule for noon.
