The South Dakota State volleyball team dropped a pair of 3-1 matches on Friday at the season-opening Wyoming Cowgirl Classic in Laramie, Wy., first to Idaho State and then to the host Cowgirls.
The Jackrabbits started the day with a 25-22 first-set win over Idaho State, but the Bengals bounced back to take the final three sets to secure the win.
Kelli Fiegen led the Jacks with 13 kills and an impressive .391 hitting percentage and added six block assists and a pair of solo blocks in the loss.
Ellyce Youngren added 10 kills while Stacey Wernert led the team with 11 digs.
Four different Bengals tallied double-digit kills in the win, led by Jaclyn Hone.
The Jacks dropped the opening set against Wyoming in the second match of the day, rebounded to win the second set, but dropped the final two sets to fall to 0-2 on the young season.
Fiegen led the Jacks again in the second match of the day, this time with a career-high 19 kills and a .324 hitting percentage.
Freshman Fiona Jones cracked the double-digit kills mark for the first time in her career with 12.
Nicole Peters handled the setting duties in both matches, racking up a career-high 35 set assists against the Cowgirls.
A trio of Wyoming hitters finished with 11 kills in the win, which improves the Cowgirls to 2-0 on the season.
The Jackrabbits wrap-up the
tournament on Saturday against Rutgers at 6 p.m.
