MANHATTAN, Kan. - South Dakota State led the vast majority of the game, but Kansas State made the plays down the stretch to claim a 56-51 victory in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday night at Bramlage Coliseum.
The Wildcats stayed unbeaten, improving to 6-0. SDSU dropped to 3-3 on the season, with all three losses coming on the road.
After Kansas State scored a basket on the opening possession of the game, the Jackrabbits reeled off the next 11 points. Kristin Rotert gave SDSU a 5-2 lead with a three-pointer and Jennie Sunnarborg scored six consecutive points. The Jackrabbit lead grew to as many as 14 at 21-7 on a basket by Steph Paluch with 8 minutes and 45 seconds remaining in the front half.
K-State chipped away at the deficit before scoring the final six points of the half to pull to within six, 27-21, at halftime.
The second half started much the same as the first as the Jackrabbits scored the first five points on a basket by Sunnarborg and three-pointer by Rotert to build the lead back to double digits. However, Kansas State rallied to knot the game at 38-all on a layup by Brittany Chambers midway through the second half and took its first lead since 2-0 at the 9:15 mark on a basket by Taelor Karr.
The Jackrabbits responded by scoring the next six points to gain a 44-40 lead and clung to a two-point lead, 49-47, heading into the under-four-minute media timeout.
Chambers gave the Wildcats the lead for good at 50-49 with 2:15 to play with her third three-pointer of the night. Branesha Brown converted a traditional three-point play on the next K-State possession and the Wildcats made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the victory.
Sunnarborg paced the Jackrabbits with 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, while Rotert, the co-Summit League Player of the Week, added 17 points, including a season-high three three-pointers.
Leah Dietel led the Jackrabbits' 31-30 rebounding advantage with a game-high eight rebounds.
SDSU finished the game 20-of-44 from the field, 45.5 percent, including 5-for-14 on three-pointers. Free throws proved to be the difference in the contest as the Jackrabbits made 6-of-9 attempts, 66.7 percent, while K-State was 14-of-20, 70 percent.
After going 6-of-25 from the field in the opening half, the Wildcats ended the night 18-of-52, 34.6 percent, including 6-of-21 from long range.
Chambers shared game-high with 18 points, while Brown contributed 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
SDSU, which committed 38 turnovers in its last outing, made 20 miscues in Tuesday's game. Kansas State committed 17 turnovers.
The Jackrabbits open Summit League play Saturday afternoon, hosting rival North Dakota State. Tipoff is slated for 5 p.m. at Frost Arena, with the men's game completing the doubleheader at 7:30 p.m.
