KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- South Dakota State overcame a 15-point first-half deficit, sinking 23 of 24 free throw attempts in the second half, to upend UMKC 79-73 in Summit League women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.
The Jackrabbits extended their season-best winning streak to nine games, improving to 18-7 overall and 13-1 in league play. SDSU also maintained its three-game lead in the Summit League standings. UMKC dropped to 15-10 overall, 6-7 in The Summit League.
Trailing 13-12, the Kangaroos dominated the final 13 minutes of the first half, reeling off a 15-2 run over a five-minute span to go up 27-15 after a LeAndrea Thomas steal and layup with 8 minutes and 18 seconds to play in the opening stanza.
Using a pressure defense that forced 13 first-half turnovers, UMKC extended its lead to 38-23 before Hannah Strop provided a glimmer of hope for the Jackrabbits with a three-pointer with five seconds remaining in the opening half to trim the margin to 12 at 38-26.
SDSU carried the momentum into the second half, scoring the first eight points in less than two minutes. Strop's third three-pointer of the game knotted the game at 44-all with 14:21 to play.
The Jackrabbits grabbed their first lead, 48-47, since the opening minutes on two free throws by Jennie Sunnarborg with 11:17 to play, and held a 69-63 advantage after a Steph Paluch three-pointer with a tick under four minutes to play.
UMKC battled back to draw even at 69-all on a three-pointer by LeAndrea Thomas with 2:47 to play, but Jill Young scored on driving layups on back-to-back possessions to break the eighth and final tie of the game with 1:35 remaining.
Trailing 75-73, UMKC had a chance to tie with less than 10 seconds remaining, but Dayon Hall-Jones missed a shot from in close. Sunnarborg and Tara Heiser each converted two free throws in the final five seconds to seal the victory.
Sunnarborg and Ashley Eide each turned in double-double performances for the Jackrabbits. Sunnarborg led the way with 16 points and a career-high 13 rebounds, while Eide tallied 10 points and 10 boards. Strop scored a career-high 14 points off the bench, while Young rounded out SDSU's double-digit scorers with 13.
The Jackrabbits, who shot 54 percent from the field in the second half, finished the night 22-of-53 from the field, 41.5 percent, including 6-of-18 on three-point attempts. Overall from the stripe, SDSU was 29-of-33 for 87.9 percent.
UMKC placed three player in double figures, led by Kim Nezianya with 16 points, followed by a dozen from both Hall-Jones and Eilise O'Connor.
SDSU held a 43-30 rebounding advantage. Ashli Hill led UMKC with six rebounds.
The Jackrabbits return to action Monday at the University of South Dakota. Tipoff is slated for 7:05 p.m. at the DakotaDome in Vermillion. Television coverage begins at 7 p.m. on Midco Sports Net.
