BROOKINGS, S.D.—With five starters scoring in double figures, the South Dakota State University women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a 75-65 win over Brigham Young University Friday night in front of 1,921 fans at Frost Arena.
The Jackrabbits, who have won 22 straight home games, were led by senior guard Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.), who scored 15 points. Classmate Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) added 14 points. Sophomore Chynna Stevens (Clark) had 11 points and a game- and career-high 11 rebounds for her first-ever collegiate double-double. Sophomore Kerri Young (Mitchell) and freshman Macy Miller (Mitchell) added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Brigham Young got a game-high 25 points from Morgan Bailey and Makenzi Morrison added 11.
BYU led 20-15 with 6:49 remaining in the first half before the Jackrabbits went on a 14-0 run, highlighted by five points from freshman Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) and four points by Miller. SDSU held a 31-26 halftime lead.
The Jacks opened the second half on a 12-2 run to take a 43-28 lead as Waytashek and Clarin combined for nine points. SDSU eventually built its lead to 24, 58-34, after two foul shots by Waytashek.
South Dakota State made all 16 of its foul shots in the contest to set the school record.
The Jackrabbits host Creighton at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Frost Arena.
