CHICAGO—Senior Megan Waytashek scored her 1,000th career point and had a game-high 26 points, but it wasn't enough as the South Dakota State women's basketball team lost 84-62 Saturday to No. 18/20 DePaul in front of 1,722 fans at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) was 10 of 15 from the field, including 5 of 8 from three-point range, and 1 of 2 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed a game-high seven rebounds and blocked two shots. Waytashek's 1,000th career point came in the first half when she took a pass from sophomore Chynna Stevens (Clark) in the left corner and sank her third three-pointer of the night with 2:06 to go in the half.
Senior Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.) was the only other Jackrabbit in double digits with 10 points.
DePaul (4-1) opened the game with an 8-0 run with Megan Podkowa scoring all eight. South Dakota State (1-2) responded with its own 8-0 run with back-to-back Waytashek three-pointers and a layup by sophomore Clarissa Ober (Glencoe).
The Blue Demons, who pressed the entire game, used a 15-4 run to take a 23-12 advantage with 10:21 to go in the half. Waytashek and freshman Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) combined for seven points to cut the lead to 24-19. DePaul stretched its lead to 10 three times, including at halftime, 39-29.
SDSU got as close as nine points early in the second half after Clarin converted a layup and Waytashek sank her fourth three-pointer of the game at 18:30.
Podkowa led DePaul with 24 points, 5 blocks and 6 steals. Brittany Hrynko had 16 and Jessica January and Megan Rogowski had 11 points each.
South Dakota State returns to action Monday when it hosts Sam Houston State at 6 p.m. in Frost Arena.
