BROOKINGS, S.D.—The South Dakota State University women's basketball team opened the game with a 16-3 run and recorded a 60-49 nonconference win over Sam Houston State Monday night in front of 1,557 fans at Frost Arena.
The Jacks, who snapped a two-game losing streak, were led by sophomore Kerri Young (Mitchell) and her team-high 11 points. Freshman Macy Miller (Mitchell) added nine points as did senior Rachel Walters (Sioux Falls) in a reserve role. Nine Jackrabbits scored in the game. Sophomore Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) snared a game- and career-high 12 rebounds. She also blocked three shots, tying her career best.
South Dakota State limited Sam Houston State to 17 points, the fewest first-half points since Jan. 3, 2013, when it limited Kansas City to 15 points.
After the Jacks erupted for their 16-3 run, they used a 10-0 run for a 28-7 lead. Seven Jacks combined to score their first 28 points.
Shernisse Robertson's game-high 15 points led the Bearkats, now 0-3.
South Dakota State plays Northern Illinois at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the UNLV Lady Rebel Round-Up in Las Vegas, Nev.
