SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — South Dakota State had a bad day offensively and in-state rival South Dakota (18-13) took advantage, beating the Jackrabbits, 72-58, Monday in the semifinals of The Summit League Women's Basketball Championship in front of 5,871 fans at the Sioux Falls Arena.
Junior Megan Waytashek (Lino Lakes, Minn.) scored a team-high 18 points and senior Steph Paluch (Pierre) tallied 12 points for the Jackrabbits (22-9).
The Coyotes led from start to finish, building an early nine-point lead, 15-7, with 10:48 to go in the first half. The Jacks cut the lead to 17-13 on a pair of free throws from Waytashek.
Late in the first half USD took a 14-point lead when South Dakota's Bridget Arens made back-to-back layups to put the Yotes up 37-23. Paluch made two free throws to cut the lead to 37-25 at halftime.
South Dakota took a 23-point lead with 11:12 to go in the second half before the Jackrabbits went on a 12-0 run to pull within 11, 56-45. Freshman Kerri Young (Mitchell) scored five of her eight second-half points to jump-start the run, and Waytashek added five points. USD responded with a 10-4 run to put the game out of reach.
Nicole Seekamp (19) and senior Polly Harrington (18) led the Coyotes.
South Dakota State awaits a possible at-large NCAA bid or a trip to the WNIT.
