USD: The Rivalry
- With just three games left, the South Dakota State women's basketball team has a chance to improve its Summit League standings when it when it opens a doubleheader with the Jackrabbit men's basketball team hosting in-state rival South Dakota Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in the friendly confines of Frost Arena.
- Currently second in the league race and a win Saturday would put them a game behind the Coyotes. Both teams finish their regular-season schedules at home vs. Western Illinois and IUPUI next week.
- Saturday's game will be televised live regionally on Midco Sports Net (626 HD channel, standard channel 26) and on ESPN3 file://localhost/(http/::es.pn:1EmFa01). Jay Elsen will call the play-by-play and Brad Newitt will provide the color commentary.
- SDSU is 18-8 overall, 9-4 in league play after winning its eighth overall and fourth Summit League road game at Omaha Wednesday, 60-49.
- Senior Megan Waytashek and freshman Macy Miller scored 17 and 15 points, respectively to lead the Jackrabbits over the Mavericks.Â
- South Dakota State will be protecting a modest seven-game home winning streak and a 5-0 league record in Frost. It last lost at home Dec. 10, 2014.
- SDSU will be looking to snap a two-game losing streak vs. USD. The Jackrabbits lost the season's first meeting, 82-78, in Vermillion Jan. 17. They were without the services of Megan Waytashek in that game due to an illness.
- South Dakota, 21-5 overall and 11-2 in league play, won its sixth consecutive game Wednesday, defeating Denver 79-68 in Denver.
- The Coyotes enter Saturday's game with a 9-4 overall road record and a 5-2 road record in Summit League games. Their two league road losses were at Oral Roberts (81-65) Jan. 8 and at IUPUI (68-43) Jan. 24.
- Saturday's game marks the 76th meeting between South Dakota State and South Dakota. SDSU leads the series 53-22.
Noteworthy
- With its win at Omaha Wednesday, SDSU is still two games behind first place South Dakota in The Summit League standings.
- In the first game vs. USD, senior Megan Waytashek did not play due to an illness. The Jackrabbits are 0-2 when Waytashek is sidelined.
- The Jackrabbits have won six of their last seven games. They have won by an average of 15.6 points and outrebounded their opponents by 9.6.
- SDSU has used four different lineups this season. The latest has seniors Mariah Clarin and Megan Waytashek, sophomore Kerri Young and freshmen Ellie Thompson and Macy Miller. Thompson stepped into the lineup Feb. 8, replacing sophomore Chynna Stevens who has a foot injury. No timetable has been given for her return.
- South Dakota State is 58-6 (.906) all-time at home in Summit League contests and has won 29 of its last 30.
- The Jackrabbits are 111-22 (.834) overall in Summit League games since joining the league in 2007-08. The Jacks have won 14 of their last 18, dating to a 71-60 win over Omaha Feb. 13, 2014.
- SDSU head coach Aaron Johnston, who won his 350th game Dec. 29, enters Saturday's game with a 359-125 (.741) overall record and a 111-22 (.834) league mark.
- SDSU has had a player score 20-or-more points in 16 of its 26 games and in 14 of the last 21 outings.

- Fielding lineups of either a freshman, two sophomores and two seniors or two freshmen, a sophomore and a pair of seniors, the Jackrabbits have a 18-8 overall record with a win at then-No. 25 Arkansas and victories over two top-10 CollegeInsider Teams and a 9-4 Summit League record.
- Statistically, South Dakota State's biggest strengths have been rebounding (the Jacks outrebound opponents by 8.8 boards per game) and free-throw shooting (.774) in Summit League-only games.
- Megan Waytashek (13.9 ppg and 39.4 three-point percentage) is having an all-league season so far. She has five 20-plus point outings, a double-double, scored in double figures 19 times and ranks eighth in overall and 10th in league-only scoring (13.4) in the Summit League.
- Macy Miller (13.9 ppg and 51.0 field goal percentage) is one of the top freshmen in The Summit League, ranking ninth overall and seventh in league-only scoring (15.1).
- Senior Mariah Clarin (11.9 ppg and 7.2 rpg) and freshman Ellie Thompson (5.5 ppg, 4.3 rpg) are in the frontcourt for the Jacks. Overall, Clarin is 12th in scoring and fifth in rebounds and in league play, 11th (13.3) in scoring and fourth (7.7) in rebounds.
- Miller and sophomore Kerri Young (9.5 ppg and 2.8 apg) give the Jacks a pair of 6-footers in the backcourt. Both have the ability to get to the basket and hit the three-pointer.
- Four reserves have been key to SDSU's success. Sophomore Clarissa Ober (4.3 ppg, 4.2 rpg) leads all non-starters in scoring and gives the Jacks size in the middle. Senior Rachel Walters (3.7 ppg, 39.4 3FG%) is another three-point threat for the Jacks. Junior Chloe Cornemann (1.2 ppg) and freshman Alexis Alexander (1.8 ppg, 1.6 apg) are solid guards who add a strong defensive presence.
A Glance at South Dakota
- South Dakota continues to lead The Summit League after defeating Denver Wednesday, 79-68.
- Senior guard Raeshel Contreras leads the Coyotes and is sixth in league play in scoring, averaging 16.8 and 15.8 points per game, respectively. Senior guard Nicole Seekamp is chipping in 14.2 points per game. South Dakota is scoring at a 80.1 clip and has a 10.9 scoring margin.
- On the boards, four Coyotes average 4-or-more rebounds per game led by McCloud's 6.3 average. Seekamp dishes a team-best 5.0 assists per game and Contreras averages 2.6 three-pointers per game.
- The Coyotes are shooting 44.9 percent from the field, 35.9 percent from three-point range and 75.6 percent from the free-throw line.
The South Dakota Series
- Saturday's game marks the 76th meeting between South Dakota State and South Dakota, dating to a 35-26 Jackrabbit victory Feb. 4, 1967, in Vermillion. It was the second game in SDSU's first season as a varsity program.
- Overall, the Jackrabbits hold a 53-22 series advantage, winning 36 of the last 39 meetings, but they have lost the last two meeting vs. the Coyotes, including an 82-78 game in Vermillion Jan. 17, 2015.
- SDSU won the first 14 games in the series before the Coyotes won 18 of 23 matchups between the 1977-78 and 1990-91 seasons. The Jackrabbits followed with 25 consecutive victories to start their recent run of success.
- SDSU had won six meetings in a row starting with an 87-63 victory in the championship game of the 2003 NCAA?Division II North Central Regional at Frost Arena. However, that streak came to an end in 2012 as the two squads split the series in their first year together as members of The Summit League.
