BROOKINGS, S.D.—Senior guard Megan Waytashek made the most of Senior Day as she scored a game-high 21 points to lead the South Dakota State University women's basketball team to an 82-53 win over IUPUI Saturday afternoon in Summit League action in front of 1,887 fans at Frost Arena.
Waytashek, from Lino Lakes, Minn., moved into a tie for 17th all-time at State with 1,335 points. Waytashek and classmates Mariah Clarin (Princeton, Minn.), Megan Stuart (Rosemount, Minn.) and Rachel Walters (Sioux Falls) were honored pregame.
The Jackrabbits finish the regular season 21-8 overall and 12-4 in the Summit. They will be the second seed in The Summit League Championships, held March 7-10 at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. They will play Denver at 2:30 p.m. March 7.
All five South Dakota State starters scored in double figures. Clarin added 13 points while sophomore Kerri Young (Mitchell) and freshmen Macy Miller (Mitchell) and Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) each scored 10 points. Miller, Thompson and freshman Alexis Alexander (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) each snared a game-high six rebounds.
IUPUI, now 14-15 and 9-7, was led by Akilah Sims' 13 points.
The Jackrabbits opened the game on a 15-0 run, fueled by seven points from Waytashek. On defense, South Dakota State forced IUPUI into eight turnovers during that stretch. The Jacks led 42-21 at half.
Waytashek gave SDSU its largest lead, 32 points, with a three-point field goal from the top of the key for a 58-26 margin with 14:23 remaining.
