BROOKINGS, S.D. —Jan. 21, 2016—Freshman guard Madison Guebert (Apple Valley, Minn.) sank a 10-foot jump shot with 4.6 seconds remaining to lift the South Dakota State University women's basketball team to a 68-66 double-overtime win over IUPUI Thursday night in The Summit League in front 1,868 fans at Frost Arena.
South Dakota State, now 15-4 overall and 5-1 in conference play, had four players score in double figures. Junior guard Kerri Young (Mitchell) led the Jackrabbits with 16 points. Sophomore forward Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) recorded her third double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds while senior guard Gabrielle Boever (Worthington, Minn.) scored 12 points in her first start of the season. Sophomore guard Macy Miller (Mitchell) added 11 points.
IUPUI, now 13-6 and 4-2, was led by Sydney Hall's 18 points. Mikale Rogers added 17 points and 11 rebounds while Danielle Lawrence scored 12 points.
South Dakota State held a 28-21 lead after the first half but saw IUPUI open the third quarter with an 11-0 run. Young snapped that streak with a 3-point field goal with 6:23 to play in the quarter. Young's 3-pointer started a 12-2 run which was capped when freshman center Jessica Mieras (Sioux Falls) scored on an offensive rebound to give the Jacks a 40-34 lead with 3:34 remaining in the quarter. Mieras snared a career-high nine rebounds.
IUPUI scored five unanswered points to close the third quarter and Lawrence sank a 3-pointer to open the fourth quarter for a 42-40 Jaguars lead. The teams traded points as Miller sank two free throws with 2:55 to play in regulation to tie the game, 51-51.
The teams traded points in the first overtime, which ended 55-55.
After Miller scored to give State a 65-62 lead with 2:13 to play in the second overtime, the Jaguars' Jenna Gunn scored four-straight points to give IUPUI a 66-65 lead with 1:10 left. Boever sank one of two free throws to tie the game, 66-66 with 47 seconds left. After IUPUI missed a shot, the Jackrabbits ran the clock down to set up Guebert who started to drive but pulled up and hit the game-winning shot.
South Dakota State closes a three-game homestand by facing Western Illinois Saturday at 2 p.m.
