VERMILLION, South Dakota—Sophomore
Madison Guebert scored a team-high 21 points despite the South Dakota State women's basketball team falling 65-62 to South Dakota Saturday afternoon in front of 2,595 fans in the Coyote Sanford Sports Center.
With the loss, the Jackrabbits fall to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in The Summit League. USD improves to 13-2 and 2-0.
Guebert was 7 of 17 from the field, including sinking 5 3-pointers. Senior
Kerri Young tallied 14 points while junior
Ellie Thompson netted 10 points and a career-high tying 3 blocks. Sophomore
Sydney Palmer grabbed a team- and career-high seven rebounds to go with career-tying nine points.
Allison Arens led South Dakota with 24 points and 6 assists. Jaycee Bradley added 12 and Abigail Fogg 11.
The Jackrabbits had a chance to send the game into overtime, but a 3-point attempt rimmed out at the buzzer.
SDSU led by 11 points, 37-26, at halftime when Palmer and Guebert combined for four 3-pointers in the final 4:07. A Guebert trey with 39.3 seconds left in the half gave State its largest lead of the half, 37-24.
The Coyotes outscored the Jackrabbits 22-9 in the third quarter, using a 10-3 run the final 3:55 to take a two-point lead, 48-46. USD opened the fourth quarter on a 9-5 run to push its lead to six, 57-51. Young sank a 3-pointer to fuel an 8-5 run to cut the Yotes' lead to three, 57-54, with 6:10 remaining.
Palmer, who sank her career-tying third 3-pointer, tied the game at 57-57 with 5:27 left. A pair of Thompson free throws tied the game again at 59-59 with just over two minutes to play.
After a jumper by Bridget Arens, the Jackrabbits were forced to foul. Allison Arens sank a pair to put USD up 63-59 with 21.2 left. Guebert sank an off-balance 3-pointer with 13.2 left to make it 63-62, but Arens sank two more free throws for a 65-62 lead and the win.

- Ellie Thompson scored her 700th career point with a layup at the end of the first quarter.
- Guebert extended her free-throw steak to 12, going 2 of 2.
- Guebert has now scored 20-or-more points and 4-or-more 3-pointers in her last three games.
