STANFORD, California – March 19, 2016 – For the second time in the history of the South Dakota State University women's basketball program, the Jackrabbits have advanced the NCAA Tournament's second round. South Dakota State, the No. 12 seed in the Lexington Region, used an 11-1 run to open the third quarter to record a 74-71 win Saturday over No. 5 Miami at Maples Pavilion.
South Dakota State, which is in its seventh NCAA Tournament in eight seasons, won its first opening-round game at the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
The Jackrabbits, now 27-6, will play the winner of No. 4 Stanford/No. 13 San Francisco Monday at Maples Pavilion.
Freshman guard Madison Guebert (Apple Valley, Minn.) scored 14 of her 19 team-high points in the first half to lead SDSU. Sophomore guard Macy Miller (Mitchell) added 18 points and sophomore forward Ellie Thompson (Chaska, Minn.) scored 14 points. Miller and Thompson each scored 12 points in the second half.
The Jacks trailed 22-18 after the first quarter and 39-37 at halftime. Guebert sank one of her four first-half 3-point field goals before the buzzer to bring SDSU within two.
Guebert, who tied the SDSU NCAA record for most points and 3-pointers, then opened the third quarter with a 3-pointer to give South Dakota State a 40-39 lead and the Jackrabbits never trailed again. Miller and Thompson each scored before senior guard Chloe Cornemann (Yankton) sank a baseline jump shot for a 48-40 lead. Thompson later scored five-straight points as the Jackrabbits held a 55-48 lead after the third quarter.
Junior forward Clarissa Ober (Glencoe, Minn.) scored inside to give SDSU a 61-51 lead. Miami, the nation's No. 19 team, cut the lead to three, 65-62, but Thompson answered with a 3-pointer. Miami got within three points again, 73-70, with 8.6 seconds remaining but senior guard Gabby Boever (Worthington, Minn.) sank one of two free throws to keep the Hurricanes at bay.
