Jackrabbits defeat Augustana
SIOUX FALLS, S.D.—Senior Mateus Moreira broke the school record for career singles wins Friday night as the South Dakota State men's tennis team defeated Augustana University, 8-1, at the Huether Tennis Centre.
Moreira beat Reed Ritterbusch 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles to record his 55th career win. He has won his last two matches, is 16-13 overall, 12-9 in dual matches, including 9-8 at No. 4.
"Hats off to Matty today in breaking the record for most singles wins. He did it in style without dropping a game and he should be very proud of himself," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl. "He has been Mr. Consistency over the last four years and now he has the record to show it. I am so happy for him."
The Jackrabbits, who improve to 12-10, won the doubles point for the 13th time this season, sweeping all three matches. Moreira and freshman Emerson Styles won 9-8 (10-5) at No. 1, junior Jonny Higham and sophomore Marco Paulo Castro won 8-2 at No. 2 and senior Henrique Pereira and Chuck Tang won 8-1 at No. 3.
"The team played well and we were able to work out some of the kinks. I love the way we are playing and the energy we are bringing," Engdahl said. "We need to keep playing smart and positive tennis in practice this week and it will transition well into next weekend in Omaha."
At singles, senior Lovro Curcija won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 and Pereira won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2. Castro won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5 and Tang won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Jackrabbits return to action April 22 when they play at Creighton at 12:30 p.m.
