BROOKINGS, S.D.—With just two matches remaining in the regular season, the South Dakota State men's tennis team is in a must-win situation when it travels to Omaha for a pair of matches this weekend.
The Jackrabbits play a nonleague match at Creighton Friday at 12:30 p.m. at the Hanscom Tennis Center. The big match for the Jacks is Saturday at 10 a.m. when they meet Omaha at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center. A win puts SDSU in The Summit League Championship.
"It is obviously a big weekend for the team. We know if we beat Omaha we make it into the tournament, and if we lose we are out of the tournament. We have to expect that Omaha is going to be fired up and ready to go on its home courts," sixth-year head coach Michael Engdahl said. "That being said, our team has played great tennis in every league match this year. We are a couple of points and a couple of emotional moments away from being at the top of the league. We need to bring the same intensity and energy we brought to those matches, keep our emotions in check in the big moments, and play Jackrabbit tennis. If we do that, it will be a great weekend for Jackrabbit tennis."
South Dakota State is 12-10 overall and 1-3 in league play. It will be looking to end a two-match losing streak vs. league opponents. In their last Summit League match, the Jackrabbits lost 5-2 to IUPUI April 8. Since then, they defeated Augustana University, 8-1, April 15.
Sophomore Marco Paulo Castro owns a 7-2 record the last nine matches, is 9-1 at No. 6 singles and sports a 3-1 mark vs. league opponents.
Senior Lovro Curcija, who was injured for the IUPUI match, is 11-9 in dual matches, including 11-6 at No. 1 singles.
Castro and junior Jonny Higham have a three-match winning streak playing at No. 2/No. 3 doubles. The duo is 7-1 at No. 2 and 3-0 at No. 3.
Creighton snapped a five-match losing streak with a 7-0 win at Western Illinois April 17. The Bluejays are 7-9 overall.
Omaha is 10-14 overall and 1-3 in The Summit League. The Mavericks' lone win came vs. Western Illinois April 3. UNO dropped back-to-back matches to IUPUI and Oral Roberts the last two weeks.
