Two South Dakota State volleyball players set career highs, but it wasn't enough as the Jackrabbits lost 3-1 to Weber State Friday in the Comfort Suites University Jackrabbits Invitational in Frost Arena.
Â
SDSU (0-5) lost 25-16, 25-20, 26-28 and 25-16. Weber State improves to 3-2.
Â
"There were a lot of positives after not having a solid match last night. We turned it around at least.," fourth-year head coach
Nicole Cirillo said. "We passed better, and we had three different players in double digits in kills. There is a lot to take away from this both good and bad."
Â
Junior
Makenzie Hennen recorded a career- and match-high 18 kills and registered 12 digs for her second double-double of the season and fifth of her career.
Â
Also in double figures in kills were freshman
Crystal Burk with 11 and senior
Sierra Peterson with 10. Defensively, three Jacks were in double digits in digs, led by sophomore
Kari Brucker's personal-best 24 digs. Besides Hennen, rookie
Ellie Thein had 12 digs.
Â
How it Happened: South Dakota State got off to a slow start in set one, falling behind 15-9. The Wildcats pushed their lead to 18-11 before consecutive kills from freshman
Sydney Andrews, Peterson and senior
Payton Richardson cut their lead to 18-14. The teams traded kills until 23-15 when Weber State finished with a pair of kills for the win.
Â
Another late rally by the Jackrabbits had them down 23-15 until a block by Peterson and Andrews, a service ace by Hennen, a block by Burk and Andrews and kills from Peterson and Burk pulled SDSU to within three, 23-20. A Weber State kill and service ace ended the set.
Â
The third set had 16 ties, the last at 26-26 before Hennen had two kills and the Wildcats committed an attack error, forcing a four set.
Â
Weber State raced out to a 24-12 lead before SDSU used a 4-0 run, capped by a solo block by Richardson, to cut the lead to 24-16. A Wildcat kill ended the match.
