The Jacks opening their season at the Bison Open in Fargo is nothing new.
For the eighth consecutive year, the Jacks kick things off Friday night at the NDSU-hosted meet at Rose Creek Golf Course in Fargo, the same location as this year's Summit League Championships.Â
"Typically, this has been a meet where we may not have rolled everybody out," said DeHaven, who is in his 16th season at the helm of the Jacks program.Â
This year's Bison Open means a little bit more to coach Rod DeHaven and his team, though.
"It's an important meet, from the perspective of that's where the conference championships will be held," DeHaven said.Â
"You get your feel for Rose Creek Golf Course and the layout and you know?— how it's gonna feel coming in the parking lot... so when they come back on November 2,?— of course, the landscape could be dramatically different?— but just using a lot of things from a mental standpoint of how things feel when you're on that course and being able to apply them again on November 2," he added.Â
On top of being able to check out the conference championship course over two-months before Summit League Championships, conference opponents North Dakota State University, North Dakota, and South Dakota will also be at the meet to provide the Jacks a look at their competition down the line.Â
"I think we'll give people as many opportunities as possible to get on that course," DeHaven said.
On the 6K course, the men's team will look to repeat as meet champions. Last year the Jackrabbits won with a score of 26. North Dakota State followed close behind with 29 points and North Dakota with 82 points.Â
Junior and 2019 Summit League Athlete to Watch Gabe Peters finished third overall at last year's meet with a time of 19:03.5..
Sophomore trio Tom Breuckman (5th place, 19:13.4), Ben Olsen (7th, 19:21.8) and Joseph Minor-Williams (9th, 19:24.7) rounded out the top ten to lead the Jackrabbits.
Returning to the lineup is 2018 Bison Open runner-up Micah Mather who ran an 18:55.2 a year ago.Â
Sophomores Thomas Breuckman (fifth, 19:13.4), Ben Olson (seventh, 19:21.8) and Joseph Minor-Williams (ninth, 19:24.7) rounded out the top-10 finishers
On the women's side, sophomore Ellie Friesen finished second in the women's 4K race last year with a time of 14:20.8. Junior and 2019 Summit League Athlete to Watch Anna Donnay took eighth overall (14:34.8), while junior Emma Nelson was the third Jackrabbit to cross the finish line, finishing 17th overall (15:24.0).
