MADISON, Wis. – The South Dakota State men's golf team sits in eight place after the first round of the Badger Invitational on Sunday.

The Jackrabbits shot a 295 in the initial 18 holes of the event at the par-72, 7,294 yard University Ridge Golf Course. The score marks the second best first-round total that the Jacks have posted in its prior three years competing at the Badger Invitational. In 2016, the squad carded a 294 (+6) in the first 18 holes.

"I thought we played well," said head coach
Casey VanDamme. "We had a few bad swings cost us, but I like how we competed after those few poor holes."

Jack Tanner paced SDSU, carding a first-round score of 70 (-2). The freshman recorded five birdies and shot over par on only two holes to finish the day tied for sixth, only a stroke behind the leader group.

Matthew Schaefer is tied for 25
th after posting a 73 (+1), while
Jones Comerford shot a 75 (+3) to tie for 45
th.
Jacob Otta also factored into the team score with a 77 (+5).

Harry Duggan and
Sam Batta, who is competing as an individual, recorded the same score of 82 (+10)
