VERMILLION, S.D. - South Dakota State moved to 4-1 in the Summit League Saturday afternoon with a 65-42 loss to South Dakota at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center. After scoring 20 points in the first quarter, the Jackrabbits were held to 22 points over the remainder of the contest.
The Jackrabbits were firing on all cylinders early, going 8-for-12 from the field in the opening 10 minutes and 4-for-5 from the 3-point line.
Myah Selland drained two 3-pointers for six first-quarter points, followed by five points by
Paige Meyer.
Tori Nelson gave the Jacks their first lead of the game with a layup at the 2:40 mark of the period to make it 15-13. Following six straight points by the Coyotes,
Lindsey Theuninck knocked down a three and Meyer added a layup to put the Jacks back up by one. One USD free throw made it a 20-all tie after 10 minutes.
USD held the Jacks to just 10 total points across the second and third quarter on three field goals and four free throws. Despite scoring only five points in the second quarter, the SDSU defense only allowed the Coyotes to build a 10-point heading into the halftime break. The Coyotes opened up the second half with a 14-0 run, however, to extend their lead to 24 points, which the Jackrabbits could not overcome.
Nelson put up nine points, seven of which came in the second half, to pace SDSU.
Paige Meyer grabbed four rebounds and gave out four assists, both team highs, to go with seven points. Burckhard and
Myah Selland also chipped in seven points apiece.
Liv Korngable's 15 points for USD led all players. Hannah Sjerven posted a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and added four blocks and three steals. The Coyotes benefitted from 20 second-chance points off 12 offensive rebounds. They also got 19 points off SDSU turnovers.
NOTES
- The Jackrabbits were 37 percent from the field, the lowest of the conference season and third lowest of the year.
- 42 points is the lowest scoring output for the Jacks this season.
- SDSU is now 60-34 all-time against USD.
- The Jackrabbits' streak of 19 consecutive regular season Summit League wins was snapped.
- Tori Nelson has scored 9+ points in nine of the last 10 contests, including Saturday's game.
- Tylee Irwin played in her 137th career game, the second most of any Jackrabbit in program history.
- Myah Selland continues her streak of scoring in every career appearance, 96 games.

SDSU will go on the road to Omaha (Thursday) and Denver (Saturday) next week. The Jackrabbits will tip at 5 p.m. against the Mavericks Thursday night at Baxter Arena.
