South Dakota State's Myah Selland has been named the female recipient of the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup by the Athletes for a Better World organization. Selland will be recognized at an award ceremony April 27 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.
The award, in its 18th year, is presented annually to athletes who best display character, teamwork and citizenship, the attributes Athletes for a Better World deems central to transforming individuals, sport and society. The Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup establishes the recipients as athletes of excellence both on and off the field.Â
Selland is a high academic and athletic achiever for the Jackrabbits and is involved in a number of community service organizations - most notably as a co-founder of the nonprofit Her Turn. Her Turn, which Selland founded with teammate Tori Nelson, is designed to create more equitable sporting opportunities for girls and young women in the Brookings community. Recipients of a Her Turn scholarship are able to attend an SDSU athletic camp of their choice at no cost to their family.
Selland is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American with a 3.98 GPA. She already holds and undergraduate degree in exercise science from South Dakota State and is currently pursuing a second degree in community and public health. Selland has twice earned a spot on the Summit League's All-Academic Team, which recognizes the top five basketball student-athletes in the conference based on both athletic and academic achievement. She is a five-time Summit League Academic Honor Roll member and four-time Summit League Commissioner's List honoree.
Selland is averaging 15.3 points and 6.3 rebounds for the Jacks this season, both team highs, and contributes 2.7 assists and 1.3 steals per contest. Her 1,846 career points ranks fourth in program history and 15th among active Division I players.

Past winners include Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Dick Vitale, Pat Summitt, Mia Hamm and Peyton Manning.

John Wooden, one of the greatest coaches and positive role models in the history of the NCAA, gave Athletes for a Better World (ABW) permission to present an award in his name. The Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup is presented to six distinguished athletes from any sport – male/female high school, male/female intercollegiate, and male/female professional – who best display character, teamwork, and citizenship, the attributes Athletes for a Better World deems central to transforming individuals, sport, and society. The award establishes the recipients as athletes of excellence both on and off the field, role models both as performers and persons, the most important and distinctive honor athletes can achieve.
Since 2016, ABW and The National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (NIAAA) have formed a partnership to recognize a male and female student-athlete as national scholarship winners and recipients of the Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup high school division. The NIAAA's competition includes an essay portion which asks the applicants to contemplate how the ABW Code for Living has been reflected in their life experiences.
