Seven members of the South Dakota State women's basketball team earned All-Summit League accolades, the conference office announced Thursday. The group is highlighted by
Myah Selland being named the Player of the Year and
Aaron Johnston picking up Coach of the Year honors.
As the league player of the year, Selland automatically earns a spot on the All-Summit First Team.
Paiton Burckhard,
Paige Meyer and
Haleigh Timmer were each named to the All-Summit League Second Team.
Kallie Theisen was voted the league's Sixth Woman of the Year and
Dru Gylten was selected to the All-Newcomer Team.
Myah Selland averaged 16.9 points to lead SDSU to a perfect 18-0 mark in Summit League action. She also contributed 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.67 steals per contest over the conference season. Selland shot 57 percent from the floor and 55 percent from the 3-point line. The redshirt senior has scored at least 20 points in eight games this season, five of which came in conference play, including a 30-point outing on 10-of-12 shooting with seven 3-pointers against North Dakota on January 7.
This is the second Player of the Year award for Selland as she also earned the league honor in the 2020-21 season. She is the seventh player in conference history to earn the award multiple times.
Aaron Johnston was voted the league's coach of the year for the third consecutive season and seventh overall time in his career. With Johnston at the helm, SDSU is 25-5 on the season and won the Summit League's regular season with an unbeaten 18-0 record. The Jackrabbits have won at least 20 games in a season 20 times under Johnston, including each of the last 12 seasons.
Kallie Theisen has come off the bench in every contest for the Jacks this year. She averaged 6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds to go with 20 total blocks through conference play. The junior is SDSU's leading rebounder and shot blocker. Theisen posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds at North Dakota on February 2. Theisen is the first Jackrabbit to earn the Sixth Woman of the Year award since Kerri Young did so in 2013-14. This is the first all-Summit recognition of her career.
Paiton Burckhard landed on the league's second team in her senior campaign, earning the fifth all-Summit nod of her five-year career. Burckhard tallied 12.1 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.1 assists per night and shot an even 50 percent from the floor in conference games. The senior scored in double figures 14 times through the Summit regular season and recorded 22 points and eight rebounds at home against South Dakota on January 14.
Paige Meyer, a sophomore, was named to the All-Summit Second Team for the second time in her career. She played in all 18 conference games while averaging 9.6 points and 3.2 assists. Her 2.0 assist/turnover ratio ranks second in the Summit. Meyer also shot at a 54 percent clip both from the field and beyond the 3-point line. She put up double figures in eight league games with a season-high 16 points coming at Denver on January 21.
Haleigh Timmer was SDSU's second-leading scorer through the conference season. She scored 12.9 points and collected 3.7 rebounds per game. Timmer, a sophomore, notched at least 10 points in all but three Summit games and has done so 14 consecutive times. Timmer put up her season-high of 19 points in three games this year, most recently at Kansas City on February 23.
Dru Gylten, a graduate transfer, earned a spot on the all-newcomer team after leading the Summit League with a 2.8 assist/turnover ratio this season. She ranked second for the Jacks in assists with 3.1 helpers per game, contributed 5.4 points, on average, and totaled 17 steals.
South Dakota State will open the Summit League Tournament as the No. 1 seed at 12:30 Saturday afternoon at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls. The Jacks will take on the winner of No. 8 St. Thomas vs. No. 9 Western Illinois, which will be played Friday.
