CORALVILLE, Iowa - The South Dakota State volleyball team fell in five sets to Kent State Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Fryfest Invitational hosted by Iowa.
Set scores went 23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 10-15. The Jacks fall to 1-3 on the season.
Katie Van Egdom notched a career-high 22 kills in the match while
Sylvie Zgonc (15) and
Sydni Schetnan (10) matched their personal bests. Zgonc also put down six ace serves in the contest, which matches SDSU's program record for aces in a five-set match.
The Jackrabbits notched more kills (58-52) and assists (56-41) than the Golden Flashes and tied in digs (69) and aces (13). Kent State narrowly had the edge in total points (78-76) and blocks (13-5).
Raegen Reilly dished 34 assists for the Jackrabbits.
Stella Winterfeld and Zgonc notched double-digit digs with 27 and 11, respectively. Winterfeld, Van Egdom and Reilly joined Zgonc with multiple ace serves.
Kent State used a balanced attack as four players notched at least eight kills. Kendall White and Karina Salinas had nine kills apiece and Logan Henderson and Burgundy Walters tallied eight each.
Set One: After a 2-0 start for Kent State, SDSU rattled off five straight points capped by a Zgonc ace. Another 5-0 stretch that featured consecutive Van Egdom aces pushed the Jacks' lead to 14-6. Kent State battled all the way back to tie the set at 19-all. The Flashes finished the comeback and took the first set 25-23.
Set Two: Zgonc tallied the Jacks' first three kills of the game to account for a 3-3 tie. The Flashes surged ahead with a 6-0 run, followed by a five-point stretch for SDSU that brought the game even at 9-9. Van Egdom had three kills in the run. Down by four at 19-15, Zgonc tallied two more aces while Van Egom added a kill and a solo block to bring things even again at 19. Winter brought the match level with a kill to win the set 25-23.
Set Three: SDSU raced out to a 7-0 lead in the third set paced by kills from Schetnan, Van Egdom and
McKenna Moehrle. A six-point stretch extended the Jackrabbit advantage to 17-8 and SDSU led 20-13 before Kent State ended the set on 12-1 run.
Set Four: Down 11-7, SDSU put together a 12-1 scoring run to go up 19-12. The run saw two kills apiece from Schetnan and Van Egdom, plus a series of errors by Kent State. The Flashes worked back to within two a few times over the rest of the set but Van Egom, Zgonc and Winter ended the game with three straight kills.
Set Five: SDSU took a 3-0 lead before Kent State rattled off six straight points. A bad set by the Flashes helped the Jacks back within one, 7-6, and later Zgonc made it a two-point game with her final ace, but the Jacks fell 15-10.
NOTES
- Zgonc matched Greta Bornhoft's record with six aces in a five-set match. Bornhoft originally set the record against Findlay in 2001.
- Van Egdom's previous kill record was 17 against Winthrop last week.
