DENVER - South Dakota State held off an upset-minded Denver squad Thursday night to win 73-65 on the road at Hamilton Gymnasium.
SDSU has now won 44 consecutive Summit League regular season games, which matches the 12th longest regular-season conference win streak in NCAA history. SDSU improves to 21-5 on the season and 13-0 in Summit League games.
The Jackrabbits stretched their lead to 17 points with less than two minutes remaining in the third before the Pioneers ended the period with 11 straight to make it a six-point game. Denver continued to hang around and cut the deficit all the way to four with an and-one bucket at the 2:10 mark. DU was still within four with less than a minute to play, then the Jacks finished the game with five straight free throws.
Paige Meyer tallied 17 points and eight rebounds to lead the Jackrabbits.
Mesa Byom was just behind her with 16 points - eight of which came in the fourth quarter - eight rebounds, four assists and two blocks. She connected on all four of her free throw attempts in the final 30 seconds to help seal the win.
Madison Mathiowetz and
Brooklyn Meyer also contributed 16 points apiece. They each went 6-for-9 from the floor, including three 3-pointers for Mathiowetz. Mathiowetz also tallied four assists while
Brooklyn Meyer grabbed seven boards.
Ellie Colbeck joined Byom and Mathiowetz with four assists.
The Jacks finished the contest nearly 59 percent from the floor, their second-best shooting performance of the season. Denver shot 37 percent and drained 10 3-point buckets. SDSU struggled from the free throw line, connecting on only 15-of-27 attempts, while Denver was 10-for-11.
Denver's Jordan Jones put up 21 points and five rebounds to lead the home team. Emma Smith handed out six assists and forced five steals.
NOTES
- Tori Nelson started her 100th consecutive contest and 138th overall.
- SDSU needs one more win to clinch at least a share of the Summit League regular season title for the fifth time in the last six seasons. NDSU is two games back with three games remaining on both teams' schedules.
