SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Powered by a pair of 20-point performances from
Brooklyn Meyer and
Paige Meyer, the South Dakota State women's basketball team advanced past No. 4 South Dakota, 76-63, Monday afternoon at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center.
Brooklyn Meyer poured in 21 points for the Jackrabbits on 8-for-11 shooting and a 5-of-7 showing from the free throw line. She brought her season scoring total to 528 points, which is the most single-season points by a sophomore in program history.
Paige Meyer was everywhere for SDSU, tallying 20 points, seven assists and six steals on the afternoon. She was 10-of-12 from the foul line. The duo has scored at least 20 points each in the same game three times in the last five contests.
Madison Mathiowetz added 10 points, five boards and five assists. She had two 3-pointers in the second half.
Ellie Colbeck chipped in nine points, all from beyond the arc, including two treys in the fourth quarter.
Mesa Byom also scored nine points and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds.
Tori Nelson contributed seven points, four rebounds and two blocks.
The Jackrabbits misfired on their first three shots, then put together a 6-for-8 stretch that gave them a 16-12 lead. Trailing 10-9,
Paige Meyer and Byom combined for five straight during the stretch to take the lead. SDSU led 16-14 after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, the Meyer duo combined for 12 points during a 15-2 Jackrabbit run that put the Jacks up 13, 33-20. The Coyotes worked their way back to a seven-point deficit by halftime. The sides traded baskets through the fourth and the Jackrabbits led by 10, 57-47, after three quarters as Mathiowetz connected on a trey at the buzzer.
Brooklyn Meyer and Colbeck made consecutive baskets that pushed the Jackrabbit lead to 15 early in the fourth. A scoring drought of more than three minutes allowed USD back within five before Colbeck hit a triple that sparked a 7-0 SDSU run. A
Paige Meyer steal-and-score with less than a minute to play sealed the win for the Jackrabbits.
As a team the Jackrabbits registered 15 assists on 25 made field goals. The Jacks shot 50 from the field and went 20-of-24 from the free throw line. South Dakota was 40 percent (23-for-57) in the game. Both teams connected on six 3-pointers apiece.
Three Coyotes finished in double figures, led by 16 points from Nicole Avila-Ambrosi. Grace Larkins added 15 points and Carley Duffney finished with 12 points.
NOTES
- South Dakota State advances to the Summit League title game for the 13th time in 16 seasons. The Jackrabbits have won 10 Summit League title games. SDSU is 10-2 in championship games.
- The Jackrabbits improve to 6-3 against South Dakota in the Summit League tournament and 37-5 overall in the tournament all-time.
- South Dakota State has won 20 straight games, the second-longest win streak in program history.
