BROOKINGS, S.D. - The South Dakota State women's basketball team will host its annual cancer awareness game Thursday, February 27, when it plays Denver at First Bank & Trust Arena.
Â
South Dakota State will partner with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund to host an official Play4Kay game for the first time. Play4Kay is a national movement in sports that honors the legacy of Coach Kay Yow by bringing together players, coaches, officials and fans in the fight against all cancers affecting women. It also serves as a powerful platform to celebrate survivors and inspire hope for those still battling the disease.
Â
As in previous years, proceeds from the Jackrabbits' cancer awareness game will benefit the Edith Sanford Breast Center.
Â
Through a grant funded by the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, SDSU can double its proceeds benefiting the Edith Sanford Breast Center for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Funds raised will go toward purchasing a new, updated 3D mammogram unit replacing the current mammogram machine. The replaced model will be sent to a community in Ghana that does not currently have any breast cancer screening technology.
Â
"We are thrilled to partner with SDSU and the Edith Sanford Breast Center to support the local community in this meaningful way. Access to screenings and early detection are crucial in the fight against cancer, and together, we can make a lasting impact," said Jenny Palmateer, CEO of the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
Â
The SDSU team will wear pink and white Under Armour uniforms for the game, which will be sold via live auction immediately following the contest. In previous seasons, the auction has raised as much as $14,000.
Â
Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game and pick up an "I Play 4" poster when they arrive to First Bank & Trust Arena to be featured on the "I Play 4" cam. The first 250 fans will receive a pink pom-pom. Sanford's mobile mammogram unit will be on-site from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at First Bank & Trust Arena for visitors to tour and learn more about the Edith Sanford Breast Center.
