South Dakota State overcame a cold-shooting night from the field and a 13-point first-half deficit, but converted at the free throw line to pull out a 60-53 victory over Indiana and earn a berth in the Women's NIT quarterfinals Thursday night before a sellout and record crowd of 6,053 at Frost Arena.
The Jackrabbits extended their longest winning streak in NCAA Division I to 14 games, improving to 25-5 overall. Indiana ended its season at 19-14.
SDSU will play at Wyoming on Sunday in quarterfinal action. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. Mountain Time (3 p.m. Central) in Lararmie, Wyo. The Cowgirls moved on with a 64-62 victory over Oregon before a home crowd of 7,362 Thursday night.
Indiana led throughout the first half, building a 12-5 lead in the first seven minutes and later extending the margin to 13 at 24-11 on a Kim Roberson steal and layup with 8 minutes, 3 seconds remaining in the front half.
SDSU responded with a 12-0 run over the next four minutes to get back to within one. Freshman Maria Boever scored five points in the run.
The Hoosiers stemmed the tide momentarily to go back up by six, 29-23, on a three-pointer by Nikki Smith. SDSU again crawled back to within one on a three-pointer by Andrea Verdegan before Whitney Thomas scored a basket in the closing seconds to put Indiana up 31-28 at halftime.
The Jackrabbits grabbed their first lead of the game, 36-35, at the 16:22 mark of the second half on a basket by Andrea Verdegan. Reserves Laura Nielsen and Ketty Cornemann later hit back-to-back baskets to give SDSU a 46-40 lead with 11:32 to play.
Indiana mounted one last run, outscoring SDSU 8-0 over a six-minute span to regain the lead. The Hoosiers led 53-52 with 2:28 remaining in the game, but would not score again as their roster, which featured just seven active players, was further depleted when Thomas and Kim Roberson fouled out in the final two-plus minutes.
Megan Vogel, who led all players with 14 points despite an off night from the field, tied the game at 53-all with a free throw and scored the go-ahead basket with 1:20 on the clock.
The Jackrabbits clamped down defensively down the stretch and scored its final five points at the stripe, making 5-of-8 attempts in the final minute. For the game, SDSU was 21-of-28 at the line, including a 9-for-9 performance in the first half.
Jennifer Warkenthien led SDSU at the line with an 8-for-9 effort en route to 10 points. Verdegan contributed 12 points.
SDSU needed every point from the free throw line it could muster because the Jackrabbits were not hitting from the perimeter. The Jackrabbits ended the night 3-of-21 from three-point range, including an 0-for-10 performance in the second half. For the game, SDSU made 18-of-55 shots from the field, 32.7 percent.
The Hoosiers shot just 19 percent from the field in the second half, making 5-of-26 shots in the final 20 minutes and 17-of-53, 32 percent, for the game. Indiana made 4-of-17 from three-point range and 15-of-24 at the line, 62.5 percent.
Rebounding was another key for the Jackrabbits as they pulled down 17 offensive boards and held a 49-33 advantage on the boards. Boever grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds, while Grimsrud tallied nine.
Thomas led Indiana with 12 rebounds and completed a double-double with 10 points. Nikki Smith led a balanced Hoosier offensive attack with 12 points. Sarah McKay and Roberson each tallied 11 points.
SDSU Notes: Thursday's game was the first meeting between Indiana and SDSU ...
