ROCHESTER, Mich. ? South Dakota State snapped its 12 match losing streak and handed first-year head coach Nana Allison-Brewer her first Summit League win with a 3-0 defeat of Oakland on Saturday in Rochester, Mich.
The Jackrabbits, who won by the set scores of 30-28, 25-20 and 26-24, improved to 2-12 overall and 1-3 in The Summit League with the win, while the Golden Grizzlies fall to 4-13 overall and 1-5 in league play.
Mackenzie Angner led all players with 17 kills with a .214 hitting percentage. Angner also added ten digs to complete the double-double. Ashley Kathol added a career-high 11 kills and Ellyce Youngren added ten in the win.
Oakland out hit the Jacks .248-.192 for the match, but the Jacks recorded six service aces and just two service errors, while the Golden Grizzlies manages just two aces and one error from the service line.
Justine Olsen did most of the damage for SDSU on the service line, recording three aces and no errors on the night. She also led the all-players with 13 digs on the night.
Adrienne Leone led OU with 14 kills, Amy Golem added 12 in the loss.
Oakland took an early 2-0 lead in the first set, but SDSU would come back to tie the match at four, the first of 16 ties in the first set.
The Golden Grizzlies would lead by as many as three points twice in the set, while the Jacks could never stretch their lead to more than one, until the capitalized on their second chance at set point with a 29-28 lead to win the set 30-28.
The teams tied seven times before either squad could reach eight points in the second set until Oakland broke the 7-all tie with a 4-0 run to go up 11-7.
The Jacks countered with a 7-0 run to take a 14-11 lead, only to see OU come right back to tie the match at 15. Ties at 16, 17 and 18-all followed, but the Jacks outscored the Grizzlies 7-2 down the stretch to secure the 25-20 second set win.
The Jacks took a 7-4 lead early in the third set, but Oakland quickly came back to go up 10-9 and set the tone for a back-and-forth third set. Three ties followed before SDSU went back on top 19-15.
Oakland answered with a 6-1 run to retake the lead at 21-20 as the teams exchanged the lead two more times, only to find themselves tied at 24.
The Jacks got the lead back on an Oakland error and sealed the 26-24 set win and the 3-0 sweep of the match on Kathols 11th kill.
The Jacks look to start a winning streak next weekend, when they open up a five-match home stand against Western Illinois on Friday and against IUPUI on Saturday.
First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Frost Arena.
