TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - South Dakota State wrapped up its five match swing through Florida with a 3-0 loss to Florida State on Sunday in the final match of the Seminole Tri-Tournament.
The 25-19, 25-23, 25-17 loss sends the Jackrabbits into a two week break with a 1-6 record and riding a six-match losing streak heading into their Summit League and home opener on Sept. 19 against Oral Roberts.
Mackenzie Angner led all-players in the match with 14 kills and made the all-tournament team, but Florida State used a balanced and efficient attack win the match in three sets.
The Seminoles efficency came with a .286 team hitting percentage, while the Jacks struggles to hit .080 as a team.
On a positive note for SDSU, the Jacks did well at the service line, serving up a trio of aces and limiting their service aces to four. FSU also committed four services errors and served up six aces.
SDSU scored the first point of the match, but FSU countered with four straight points to take an early 4-1 lead that they would never relenquish on the way to a 25-19 first set win.
The Seminoles scored the first three points of the second set and it looked like they would run away with an early 2-0 lead in the match, but hte Jacks fought back to tie the set at four, and take their first lead 6-5.
The Jacks would lead by as many as three at 12-9, but Florida State kept is close until they started a 5-0 run that saw a a two-point SDSU lead quickly turn into a three point deficit at 20-17.
SDSU would get as close at one point at 21-20 and again at 24-23, but a Stephanie Neville kill ended the Jacks hopes of a second set win at 25-23.
Needing a win to keep send the match to a fourth set, the Jackrabbits started the third set with a 2-0 lead, and held onto the lead until Florida State tied the match four and then at 8-all.
The Seminoles broke the 8-8 tie with a service ace, and never looked back, slowly building their lead to the 25-17 final score.
